Woodburn Transit
Volunteer Drivers Needed
The Woodburn Transit System needs volunteer drivers for its Out-of-Town Medical Transportation Program. Drivers provide a crucial service to Woodburn residents, including seniors and persons with disabilities, who are unable to drive to doctors’ appointments.

Shifts are anytime Mondays - Fridays, 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Drivers take residents to appointments in Salem or Portland and receive mileage reimbursements. (The current IRS mileage rate is $.58/mile)

A personal vehicle is needed.

If you are interested in becoming an Out-of-Town Medical Transportation Driver, please complete a volunteer application . For more information about the Program, contact Transit Manager, Kathy McClaskey, at (503) 982-5245.
Fall Leaf Program
WHEN: October 26 – December 28
TIME: Daily 8:00 a.m. -6:00 p.m.
Closed During Holidays
LOCATION: Legion Park Parking Lot ONLY

The City of Woodburn is fortunate to have many trees, and for most of the year, we enjoy the many benefits those trees provide. Unfortunately, trees as living organisms need care and nurturing and with the autumn season, the maintenance burden of collection and disposal of fallen leaves. The City continues to provide residents assistance with the disposal of collected leaves through the Fall Leaf Program. The program is necessary because of the potential public safety risks associated with the accumulation of leaves on streets and sidewalks. The leaf drop-off site is located on Park Avenue, in the parking lot of Legion Park.

Residents are reminded that fallen leaves behind the curb line belong to the property owner. Leaves falling in the street are the responsibility of the City to remove. The City recognizes that there is a great temptation to simply rake the leaves into the street for City crews to collect and dispose of. Please avoid this temptation, rake your leaves and dispose of them properly. To assist property owners with the financial burden of disposing your leaves, the City will provide a leaf drop-off site for RESIDENTS ONLY. This drop-off site is NOT intended for commercial landscape service providers who have charged residents to collect and dispose of their leaves. For more information regarding resident and business responsibilities regarding leaf collection and disposal, see City Ordinance #2225. Please remember that leaves can be composted and used in a sustainable manner to enrich your topsoil.
Anyone with questions concerning the Woodburn Fall Leaf Program, please call 503-982-5236.

Meet WPD's Newest Officer
This past Monday, Preston Neumann started his employment with the Woodburn Police Department. This past Wednesday, he was sworn in as a police officer. Preston comes to us after a few years of work as a resident assistant and director at various educational institutions in Oregon and Arizona and as a youth instructor at the YMCA.

Preston is a 2013 graduate of Newberg High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Inter-Disciplinary Studies from Western Oregon University in 2017 and a Master’s of Science degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from Portland State University in 2019.

A public oath of office ceremony (and cake!) for Preston will be had at the November 12 Council meeting, and he will attend the Basic Police Academy later this year. In the meantime, Preston will begin field training with our FTO cadre.

Welcome aboard!
Woodburn Bridge Lighting
For the next few weeks, the bridge will be lit up purple for Domestic Violence Awareness month .

Beware of Scams!
Many schemes against seniors are performed over e-mail, the phone and even through door-to-door advertising. They may take the form of a grandchild in trouble, alleged credit card offers, charity donation requests, home improvement offers, investment opportunities, banking and wire transfers, insurance offers, health products, and sweepstakes and contests, to name a few.

You may be surprised to learn that more than 90 percent of all reported elder abuse is actually perpetrated by a senior’s very own family members.

Mayor's Corner
Last weekend I attended the grand opening of the Colonia Unidad apartment complex on Park St. along with city councilors Sharon Schaub, Robert Carney and Lisa Ellsworth.

Affordable housing in Oregon, and in Woodburn, is not easy to come by. The City received recognition for its role in helping to facilitate this project, the Farmworker Housing Development Corporation’s 10th development in the Mid-Willamette Valley.

FHDC is a non-profit organization whose first housing project was our own Nuevo Amancer apartments in 1992. Under the direction of Executive Director Maria (Meg) Guerra FHDC provides education, health, leadership and workforce development programs for its residents showing how a non-profit can significantly help improve the lives of many of our hard working residents.

Woodburn Police Dominate Woodburn Fire in
"The Feud"
Series Now Tied 1-1
Every month, the Senior Estates holds a contest during their weekly “Coffee Hour” forum dubbed “Neighborhood Feud.” It pits neighborhood teams against each other in a trivia knowledge contest modeled after the TV game show Family Feud. This past Thursday, the Woodburn Police Department looked to avenge their 819 to 567 loss to the Woodburn Fire District.

The show was hosted by our Communications Manager, Tommy Moore.
(Steve Harvey, eat your heart out!)

It was a nail biter for about 10 minutes. WPD took a commanding lead and never looked back, beating WFD by a final score of 928 to 337!

With the series now tied 1-1, that can only mean a rubber match has to take place! Looking forward to seeing which team breaks the tie the next time they lock horns!
Water Conservation Tips
Conserve water during the upcoming winter months by following these tips for outdoor protection from freezing temperatures:

  • Disconnect your garden hoses.
  • Cover outside spigots with foam covers and exposed outdoor pipes with insulation.
  • Winterize your irrigation system – empty any water from the sprinkler system and shut it off for the season.
  • Shut down the timer/controller on your automatic irrigation system.
Project POOCH
Giving Good Doggies a Great Home!
Project POOCH  provides opportunities for selected youth at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility to develop the personal and vocational skills they will need to become responsible, productive members of the community. The program accomplishes this by teaching youth to care for and train shelter dogs for adoption.

They work with, care for, groom, socialize, love, and train homeless shelter dogs so the dogs can be adopted into their forever homes. The youth must train and take each dog through the successful completion of the  Canine Good Citizen  test before the dog can be adopted.

Want to adopt?  Click here  for more information!

Tree Giveaway Program
Rain, rain go away…WAIT…Not before I get my free tree!

It’s a great time to plant a tree and you can receive a free one through the City’s Urban Forestry tree giveaway program! Starting November 1st and running until April 2020 , The City of Woodburn Urban Forestry Program offers city residents a free tree to plant on their property.

Residents within Woodburn city limits can apply for a gift certificate to receive a tree from a pre-selected list. Gift certificates can be redeemed at Al’s Garden Center in Woodburn.

What’s the catch? You just need to make the commitment to properly plant and water the tree for the next two years in order to give the tree the best shot at establishing itself and thriving.
