Good evening, San Gabriel:
Thank you for joining us at Play Day! We hope you enjoyed spending your day at the historic La Laguna de San Gabriel. If you'd like to contribute to the park's restoration, visit the Friends of La Laguna website here for more information on how to donate.

As for our next event, be sure to bring your bikes down to the San Gabriel Police Department's Bicycle Tune-Up event this Saturday! They'll be stationed at the Public Works yard located at 917 East Grand Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., offering free cleanings and tune-ups for those who pass by.

Finally, please note that City Hall will be closed on May 28 for the Memorial Day holiday.

Now, here's what's making news for the week of May 23, 2018:
Firefighters respond to fire at Valley & New Center
No cause has been determined
Last week, more than twenty units responded to a fire at the Valley and New Center strip mall. After an initial investigation, officials discovered that the fire worked up into the common attic of the strip mall, extending in both directions and spreading to all units. As a result of the incident, the bulk of the structure has been destroyed.

City officials are now investigating the incident to find a cause.
City celebrates Public Works Week at local schools
National Public Works Week celebrates the importance of infrastructure
Every year, the American Public Works Association honors the men and women in Public Works who work to improve the infrastructure of cities across the nation. Here in San Gabriel, our Public Works department is responsible for several important parts of our community, including our streets, parks, sewers, sidewalks and City-owned vehicles.

To celebrate, the Public Works team visited several local schools to teach students how Public Works impacts their lives.
Movie Days are back at the Adult Recreation Center
Catch showings of "Citizen Kane," "The Greatest Showman," and more
Want to avoid the summer heat and enjoy a free movie and popcorn? Spend the second and fourth Thursday of the month at the Adult Recreation Center located at 324 South Mission Drive. Community Services will be celebrating Cinema Thursdays from June to August.

Movie screenings will include new movies as well as some classics. All movies will promptly begin at 12:30 p.m. following the daily lunch program.

Be water smart: May is National Water Safety Month
Here are some safety tips on how to have fun around the pool
Community Services is proud to celebrate the month of May as National Water Safety Month. This promotion is designed to make San Gabriel residents more water aware as summertime approaches and we seek out pools to cool off from the heat.

We encourage parents to teach their children water safety and swimming skills as early as possible and to follow these guidelines around water.
APA Fest concludes this weekend at the Playhouse
See a reenactment of a true story on stage
The APA Festival comes to a close this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with a free signature event. Artists from the Perfect Harmony Cultural Exchange Association will perform excerpts from famous Cantonese operas, including "The Peony Pavilion."

In addition, stories collected from our community will be dramatized on stage by directors Ray Rochelle and John Miyasaki.
