Preferred Email

Beginning today, Monday, Nov. 2, all of our students will be able to select a “preferred email” to receive all official college and district communications. Some additional key points for you to be aware of:

Every new student will still automatically receive a Los Rios Gmail account upon completing and submitting their application.
Once they have completed and submitted their application, the default “preferred email” account for NEW students will be the one they used to submit their application via CCC Apply. They will be able to change that at any time to either their new Los Rios Gmail account or any other email address they choose.
We will leave Los Rios Gmail as the default “preferred account” for all CURRENT students, but will be communicating with them about their ability to make this change at any time.
A student who wishes to change their “preferred email” can do so at any time via Canvas (for preferred email within Canvas only) and eServices (for preferred email for all other Los Rios systems). NOTE: Because Canvas relies on Los Rios Gmail for the Google Apps integration to work properly, they will have to make the change in both eServices and Canvas for now, a point which we will clearly communicate to students.
For faculty, OGS rosters will now indicate which email a student prefers so that faculty always have the most current correct information available when attempting to contact a student.

Email is not, and will never be, the only communication tool at our disposal. It is, however, a critical piece of our communications strategy and we all want to make it as effective as possible.

New and Improved Class Search Tool

The new class search features an improved interface with more intuitive filter options and is more responsive on mobile devices. It also combines connected lecture/lab sections to give a clearer understanding of the options for enrollment. We will continue making improvements and updates to the search in weeks ahead. Free 24/7 Telehealth Service Available for Students

Faculty and staff, Sacramento City College is excited to offer a new telehealth program for students called SCC Telehealth. The service will provide access to 24/7 medical and mental telehealth care, with no cost at the time of visit! All students should be aware of SCC Telehealth, and we want to be sure you are, too, so you can remind them to take advantage of the service when they’re feeling under the weather or overwhelmed. Please see below for a few FAQs about SCC Telehealth.

Q. Who can use SCC Telehealth?

A. Any Sacramento City College student.

Q. What services are available?

A. There are three services available 24/7 to students:

Medical: on-demand access to a medical provider that can treat a wide range of common illnesses like cold and flu, sinus infection, allergies and more
TalkNow: on-demand access to a mental health professional to talk about anything at anytime
Scheduled Counseling: scheduled options to speak to a licensed counselor

Q. How do we access SCC Telehealth?

A. Go to www.SCCTelehealth.com to register for and access telehealth services. You can do this from any web-enabled device – smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. From there, you can register with your school email address, and then you will be able to log in to begin using services via voice or video call.

Q. How much does a visit cost?

A. There is no visit cost for Sacramento City College students.

Q: Can SCC Telehealth services diagnose COVID-19?

A: SCC Telehealth will virtually assess symptoms and administer frontline care in a contained environment to limit the spread of illness. They will also give recommendations on need for testing vs. self-quarantine, and where to go if testing or further care is needed.

Handshake Updates

The Los Rios Community College District has partnered with Handshake – a modern career development platform. Students can use Handshake to discover internships, on and off campus jobs, and attend events such as the upcoming Los Rios Virtual Career Fair on Nov. 17! Please help us spread the word to your students and programs!

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Make your voice heard and be sure to vote! You can also join our students for some Election Day and post-election events. Don't forget to show your civic pride and and encourage others to vote with our "I Voted" Zoom background!

Apply for $1,000 Stipend, 2 Months Access to Hacker Lab

Hacker Lab is offering an opportunity for 75 Sacramento residents to participate in a training module in product design with a focus on PPE. They'll receive a $1,000 stipend and two months at Hacker Lab to make it happen.

Applications are open through Thursday, Nov. 5. Participants must be economically or educationally disadvantaged by COVID-19, live within Sacramento city limits and be over age 18.

We've Got Rising Stars in Journalism!

Last week in this newsletter, we featured an article written by Journalism graduate Sara Nevis for NextGenRadio @ Capitol Public Radio. This week, we'd like to spotlight another rising star – SCC Journalism student Melissa Franco!

She wrote the story, "Connecting Latinx Communities Through Theatre," for the same publication, about the founder of a local social justice theatre company. Great work, Melissa!
