Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively.

Nominate a Student for City Ways Scholarship

Don't forget to nominate a student for the new City Ways Scholarship by the Friday, Oct. 2 deadline!

The City Ways Scholarship is part of our efforts to recognize the hard work and resilience of our student scholars. City Ways Scholars are students who:

Have shown their commitment to education, despite hardships and roadblocks
Demonstrate leadership in their neighborhoods and their communities, and
Have met their life challenges with grace and strength.

We know that many of our students meet these criteria and that’s where you come in! Please consider nominating a student that you feel exemplifies a City Ways Scholar. The process is easy – all you need to do is complete and submit the online form. Scholarship recipients will be celebrated at the Spring 2021 Convocation!

The deadline to fill out the census is fast approaching. Your responses and information is kept confidential, but is critical to get an accurate count of how many people live and work in the region. Voter Registration Day Event

SCC is holding an event on National Voter Registration Day, Sept. 22, from noon to 1 p.m., featuring games, a "Ballot Bowl," Q&A session and speakers. Join the event via Zoom. And don't forget to register to vote and encourage friends and family to do the same!

Free Immigration Legal Services

September is NThe Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), in collaboration with Los Rios Community College District offers free virtual/telephonic immigration consultations to LRCCD students, faculty and staff. CHIRLA immigration services include:

Immigration consultations
DACA Renewals
Naturalization
Family-based immigration
Know Your Rights

To make an appointment visit the CHIRLA website and select “Sacramento City College” from the college options (all Los Rios students, faculty and staff should select Sacramento City College). Follow the prompts to reserve your appointment.

President Gutierrez's Office Hour

President Gutierrez will be holding an office hour twice a month during the Fall semester. Office hours will be held on the second Friday at 8:30 a.m. and fourth Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The next upcoming office hour will be Thursday, Sept. 24, 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. Please look for an email prior to each event to sign up. Zoom info will be sent via a calendar invite on the day before the event to those who signed up.
