SCC Awarded $2.9m for Latinx Dual Enrollment Program
Sacramento City College has been awarded a $2.9 million federal grant to support its work as a designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). The five-year grant will support an early college program focused on introducing local Latinx and low-income high school students to college through participation in dual enrollment.

Dual enrollment allows high school students to enroll in college-level courses and earn college units and high school credit simultaneously.

“This is very exciting news for our students and the community,” said SCC President Michael Gutierrez. “This innovative early college program will give students a powerful start to their college careers and support them on a pathway to success.”

With dual enrollment programs, some students can earn an Associate Degree or Certificate and be prepared for employment or transfer to a four-year institution upon graduating from high school. This shortens a student’s time to degree completion and ultimately allows them to enter their careers sooner.
SAGE Program Comes to a Close
An excerpt from a message from HSI-SAGE Project Director Rosana Chavez-Hernandez:

Dear SCC Community,

It is with mixed emotions that we share Students in a Global Economy, HSI-SAGE Title V. Grant is coming to a close this September 30, 2020. In 2015, SCC was the first college in the LRCCD to be awarded a Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions (DHSI) Title V. Grant which is designed to expand and enhance academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability.

Since its inception, HSI-SAGE has served SCC first-year Latinx and DI students with the countless support of dedicated HSI staff, faculty, managers, and community partners. SAGE served four different cohorts of students and offered a comprehensive first-year experience that included summer programming and learning community linked courses that focused on culturally relevant content offered both fall and spring semesters. The ultimate goal for HSI-SAGE has always been to successfully transition new students from high school to college through creating a warm familia like environment and through direct program services. We are happy to report that SAGE did just that!

This self-registration course covers research basics from getting started to evaluating sources to the importance of citations. Each lesson includes readings, videos, activities, and a quiz, which generates a certificate of completion that you can use as an assignment or extra credit. September is National Suicide Prevention Month - a time to share information about the resources available to the entire campus community:

Transfer Week is 9/21-9/24
On each day of this event one of the LRCCD Transfer/Career Centers will be hosting a selection of 4-year colleges and universities: September 21 - 24 from 9 AM to 4 PM.
  • Sept 21: Sac State Day
  • Sept 22: FLC will host Out-of-State and Private Colleges and Universities Day
  • Sept 23: UC Day
  • Sept 24: CSU Day

Constitution Day
Constitution Day is commemorated each year on September 17, the date on which the founding fathers signed the document in 1787. You can learn more about the founders, formation of the constitution and read the text online at the National Archives website. And as November approaches, don’t forget to register to vote!
President Gutierrez's Office Hour
President Gutierrez will be holding an office hour twice a month during the Fall semester. Office hours will be held on second Friday at 8:30 a.m. and fourth Thursday at 2:30 p.m., as follows:

  • 10/09, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.
  • 10/22, 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.
  • 11/13, 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.
