Responding to Immigration Authorities on Campus
Los Rios is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all students, faculty, and staff, regardless of immigration status.
Over the years, Los Rios has been a statewide leader in supporting our Undocumented students. We’ve opened Dream Centers/Undocu-Resource Centers at all four Los Rios colleges, invested in legal supports, and allocated millions of dollars of direct support for students. In this historic moment, our commitment to the safety and success of our undocumented community will never waver.
If you see immigration officials on campus, call the Los Rios Police Department (LRPD) immediately at (916) 558-2221 (or ext. 2221 from campus phones) or use the SAFE Los Rios mobile app. If immigration officials are identified on campus, the district or college will send an emergency alert. Per District policy, adopted in alignment with the California Value Act (SB 54), no Los Rios law enforcement resources will be used for immigration enforcement or information-gathering activities.

Stay Safe on Campus with SAFE Los Rios!
SAFE Los Rios is a safety communications tool for students and employees. It has two components – a free mobile app and a desktop alert.
About the App
Download the free SAFE Los Rios mobile app today in the App Store or Google Play for campus safety resources at your fingertips! We recommend getting the app before you need it, so you have a chance to become familiar with the features and how to use it in an emergency. Features include the ability to:
- Discreetly contact and share your location with campus police in an emergency by using the app’s Panic Button.
- Request a Campus Safety Escort from the Los Rios Police Department to walk you to your vehicle or other campus location.
- Send your location to a friend so they can track you in real time as you walk across campus and arrive safely at your destination.
- Submit a non-emergency crime tip.
- Access campus safety procedures for emergencies that may occur on campus.
About the Desktop Icon
All college or district-issued computers should have a SAFE Los Rios icon in the taskbar or system tray. The icon serves two functions – to receive emergency alerts (all computers, including laptops) and as a Panic Button (onsite stationary, non-student-use computers only).
Desktop Panic Button
- For onsite stationary computers: The SAFE Los Rios icon, located in the taskbar or system tray, functions as a Panic Button (replacing the ERNI button). The Panic Button provides a way to discreetly contact Los Rios police in an emergency situation, letting them know your location. To activate, triple-click the icon.

For laptop users: Because location services are not precise on laptops and other Wi-Fi-only devices, the desktop Panic Button is only available on stationary computers (typically lecture computers and front-counter stations). It is highly recommended that users download the free SAFE Los Rios mobile app on their phone to use the Panic Button feature in the app (requires location services (GPS) to be on for full functionality). All employees and students should download the mobile app and become familiar with it so they are prepared in an emergency. Note: Although laptop users will see the SAFE Los Rios icon on their computer, it will not activate if clicked (its sole function on laptops is to receive emergency alerts).

Desktop Emergency Alerts
- The SAFE Los Rios desktop icon serves as a mechanism for all college- or district-issued computers (including laptops) to receive emergency mass notifications from the college or district. If you are using a laptop and do not see the icon, turn your laptop off and back on the next time you are onsite.
Text, Phone and Email Alerts
It’s important to continue to regularly update your Emergency Alert information in Employee Self-Service. This is still the method in which the college and district will send emergency texts, phone calls and emails. Log in to ESS, select “Employee Information,” then “Emergency Alert Information” to review and save your preferences.
If you do not see the SAFE Los Rios desktop icon on your computer or you believe it is not working properly, please submit a Service Central ticket for IT assistance.

Facilitating Reading Assignments with Perusall
Perusall is an online service that encourages students to engage with texts by commenting, asking questions, and responding to classmates. The platform holds students accountable for completing reading assignments by tracking interactions with the text and other classmates and evaluates the level of engagement with each reading.

Building AI-Resistant Policies, Assignments
With the introduction of generative AI, academic integrity has shifted overnight. Instead of returning to 100% paper assignments, join us to discuss practical approaches to building AI-resistant policies and discouraging unauthorized AI use. This session will cover AI detection tools (and their weaknesses), assessment strategies, and various tools that encourage human engagement and connection.

Don’t Forget Your New Employee Parking Permit!
Reminder: Starting today, Monday, June 16, all vehicles with no valid employee parking permit displayed may be cited.
Have you not picked up your permit yet? Staff can pick up their permits at your campus Police Center by presenting:
- Photo ID

Completed and printed LRPD Vehicle Registration Form (or bring your vehicle info to complete there)
- Proof of employment (ID, Tentative Class Schedule, or Intent to Employ)
There will only be one permit for all Los Rios employees (note: student help workers and volunteers are not eligible to obtain staff permits). The permit is valid for two years and will expire on June 1, 2027.

College Closed June 19 Honoring Juneteenth
All SCC offices will be closed and no classes will be held on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, a national holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. More than a day off, Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the ongoing fight for equity and to recommit ourselves to building a more just and united community—on campus and beyond.

Enhance Communication with NameCoach in Outlook
NameCoach, the equity-driven tool already in use within Canvas, is available as an add-in for Microsoft Outlook. NameCoach allows you to record your name pronunciation to your email signature, ensuring that colleagues and students can address you correctly and respectfully.
To use this feature, simply add the NameCoach add-in to your Outlook and record your name. We encourage all employees to use this helpful feature.
