A live stream of the Convocation presentation will be available for those who can’t leave their workstations to attend or may feel more comfortable viewing from their workstation.

Panther Employees - Get Your Photo Taken!
The PIO will be taking headshots on Friday, August 19 (Convocation Day) in the Photo Studio on the second floor of the Student Services building. No reservation required, we will take photos on a drop-in basis from 11 AM - 1:30 PM. Pictures will be emailed to the participants the week following Convocation.

Introducing Service Central
Beginning on Monday, August 8, you can request IT services or get support for any IT issue through our new online Service Central portal. This includes submitting a request for computer support, software (for example, Adobe Acrobat), hardware (for example, a computer monitor), or access to tools and systems (for example, Zoom or Canvas). In this centralized online system, you’ll be able to track your requests online and ultimately receive faster responses from the IT team.

Our college and districtwide Marketing and Communications teams are here to support the great work happening at our college by creating awareness and sharing the story of Sacramento City College, the Los Rios colleges, our students, and our impact on the community.
Using the online Marketing & Website Support Request form is a convenient way to request support for one or more of the following services: website updates, event or news promotion, graphic design, and/or changes to the website faculty and staff directory. When completing your form, please keep in mind:
- All sections of the form must be completed or your request could be delayed.
- Event, social media, or newsletter promotional requests should be made at least two weeks in advance to allow for the best promotion possible. Publicity requests that are received less than two weeks in advance will be included at the discretion of the communications team as time and scheduling allows.
- Promoted activities and events should be directly affiliated with the college or district, i.e. not facility rental or unrelated community organization events.
- Due to the unique nature of digital media, flyers will not be posted. High-resolution images or graphics with minimal text are best suited for digital promotion. Flyers will be replaced with alternate graphics as needed (Note: recommended image sizes for social media are 1200 x 630px for Facebook/Twitter and 1080 x 1080px for Instagram). If you do not have an image or graphic and would like one provided for you, please note it in your request.

Study Abroad Program in Italy Next Spring
The Los Rios Study Abroad Program is now accepting applications for students to study in Florence, Italy for the upcoming Spring 2023 semester. Florence is an inspiring, vibrant city in which to live, study, and explore. Participants will immerse themselves in college courses in art, sociology, economics, business, and kinesiology while exploring cobbled streets, ancient gardens, and culturally-rich galleries and museums, and discovering modern street art, regional celebrations, energetic professional football, and wildly fascinating history replete with inventors and artists.
The program will run from February 4 through May 5, 2023 and will be led by FLC sociology professor Diane Carlson. Please encourage interested students to not let this life-changing opportunity pass them by! Applications are due Friday, November 4.

Marketing Efforts to Increase Enrollment
In the latest iteration of the district's annual marketing campaign, our goal is to get students who dropped out during the pandemic to come back and invite people who have never enrolled at Los Rios to consider it. To do this, we are focusing on our communities who have lots of outside responsibilities – taking care of kids, supporting aging parents, holding multiple jobs, and other commitments. They know getting a degree that gets them a sustainable career is the best move for themselves and their families, but don't see how they can make it work.
The "Be Both. Be All Three." campaign is a celebration of our communities' many identities – mom, dreamer, activist, student – and, eventually, graduate. With a key message of "Los Rios celebrates you," we will speak directly to our understanding of their multiple responsibilities and show them how we can be their support system while they earn a degree or credential.
We are using a wide variety of marketing strategies to reach potential students, including some new areas like television advertising, drone shows over Sacramento Republic games, new radio/audio channels and advertorials.

Important Information
Here are some helpful reminders for the college community:

Emergency Resources: Download the RAVE Guardian App to have safety resources and information at your fingertips, including what to do in case of an emergency.

Parking: Parking permits will be issued for employees for the fall semester. Parking permits are not required for students during the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. However, students will be required to park in designated student parking spaces. Los Rios Police Department (LRPD) will enforce violations in red zones and other restricted areas, metered or timed parking, disabled parking, and violations that impede traffic or block access.

Smoking: SCC is a tobacco-free, smoke-free, and vape-free campus.

Free Speech: Please be aware that outside groups occasionally visit campus exercising their constitutionally protected right to free speech. These groups might display images or engage in speech that is offensive to some. Learn more about free speech on campus.

SCC Vocal & Choral Program Helping Lead the Way in Research for Queer Vocal and Choral Pedagogy
Professor of Voice and Choral Music Daniel Paulson’s coaching and vocal work with students at Sacramento City College has contributed to research that serves transgender students in the voice studio. The recently released book “Queering Vocal Pedagogy” by Dr. Sauerland and his dissertation draw on numerous case studies including Professor Paulson and one of his students identified as Darius and Forrest, respectively.
“Queering Vocal Pedagogy presents a new vision of gender-affirming vocal music education and richly explores the experiences, perspectives, and vocal training of trans(gender) and genderqueer singers.”

SCC English Professor Publishes 2 Original Works
SCC English Professor Steve Cirrone published two works this summer – “Angel’s Trumpet,” a novel, and “Three Queer Plays,” a collection of original plays. Both books were published through Lulu.com and will soon be available on Amazon.
“Angel’s Trumpet” is about David Russo, a comfortable liar trapped in the most difficult decision of his life. Told through haunting memories of a dark and deadly passion let loose in Atlanta and West Hollywood, David wrestles with his conscience as he is forced to accept his role in the death of not just one lover, but two.
“Three Queer Plays” features three original full-length plays showcasing LGBTQA+ characters and themes. "The Tragedy of Doctor Gnosis," retells the Faustian bargain in modern gay terms; Gnosis, a self-absorbed Medieval history and literature professor, risks life and career in order to remain in the glow of Nicholas Bell, an otherworldly young man—with apocalyptic results. "Still the Parade" parodies John Webster’s "Duchess of Malfi" and sets Leon and Nick inside a tempestuous and comic war-of-wills that uses satire to insist on the universal sanctity of marriage. And "Who Killed Martini Olive?" is a raucous and raw whodunit drag murder mystery with alternate endings that follows Inspector Bottom as he investigates a gaggle of jealous stage queens for clues in the death of silicon-deep San Francisco nightclub performer Martini Olive, a campy drama that plays out through direct and hilarious interactions with the audience.
