Convocation Recap: A Celebration of Community and Progress!

SCC’s Fall Convocation was a fantastic kick-off to the new academic year! The event was both fun and informative, featuring exciting program highlights from Sustainability, Native American Student Success Center (NASSC), First Year Experience, and the Equity Pathways initiative.

Chancellor Brian King spoke of our districtwide successes, including bringing enrollment back up to pre-pandemic numbers. Later in the program, President Albert Garcia, with the college vice presidents and Academic and Classified senate presidents, announced an exciting new cross-cultural institute that the college will develop. We encourage you to stay tuned for more information about this in the coming weeks and months, as it will take efforts from all areas of the college to create wholistic and intentional instructional pathways and services that fully benefit our students most in need.

The day wrapped up with an inspiring and powerful presentation by our keynote speaker, Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy, leaving everyone energized and ready for the year ahead. Here's to a great semester!

Data Dashboards are Now Public

A set of data dashboards are now open to the public, sharing more broadly our impressive enrollment rebounds and key student outcomes. As part of our Board of Trustees’ ongoing effort to make our data and student outcomes more visible to our community, and in partnership with the district and college research offices, these dashboards show enrollment, student persistence, and student outcomes trends.

Equity Pathways Fall Cohort Applications Due by September 2nd

What is Equity Pathways (EP)?

Equity Pathways is a 9-week, $1,500 stipend professional development opportunity for SCC adjunct faculty. EP focuses on anti-racist curriculum design and teaching strategies that enhance success for disproportionately impacted (DI) students.

Why Adjunct Faculty?

Adjunct faculty play a critical role in achieving our equity and student success goals. EP strengthens their connection to campus, awareness of student support services, and participation in equity-focused practices.

Program Overview:

• Module 1: Anti-Racism in Education
• Module 2: PRIE Data Analysis & Praxis
• Module 3: Decolonizing Curriculum
• Module 4: Equitable Student Assessment

Facilitator: Mark Dennis, M.S., Ed.M., SCC Psychology

When & Where:

• Start Date: Monday, September 16
• End Date: Friday, November 15
• Time: Fridays, 10 am - 12:30 pm (via Zoom)

Your Commitment:

Attend all sessions, engage actively, and present an equity-focused project. Confirm your participation (.06 FTE) fits within your teaching load.

Student Poster Contest Celebrating and Affirming Disability as Diversity

All Los Rios students are invited to unleash their creativity and join us in celebrating and affirming disability as diversity and create art that reflects the theme: Disability = Diversity, Strength, and Pride!

Here are some examples of messages students may consider incorporating into the poster design, but are welcome to use their full creativity and think outside the box, too!

• Disability Rights are Human Rights
• Access is Love
• Disability is Diversity
• Celebrate Neurodiversity
• Not All Disabilities Are Visible
• Disability is Not a Bad Word
• Neurodivergent and Proud
• Dismantle Ableism
• The Future is Accessible

Prizes:

Multiple winners will be selected! Prizes include backpacks, college swag, and a framed copy of their printed poster. Winning designs will be displayed in the new Disability Cultural Center at Sacramento City College and across the Los Rios campuses. Winners will also receive recognition on college websites and districtwide media outlets.

How to Participate:

Submit an electronic version of their poster design as a high-resolution JPG or PDF via the online form.

SCC has a new UC Davis Advisor

The Transfer Center is excited to introduce Fabian Meneses as the new UC Davis admissions advisor for the 2024/2025 academic year! Fabian is our go-to person for all things UC Davis and looks forward to connecting and supporting students every step of the way on their educational journeys!

Services for Students:

• Schedule virtual appointments to review UC transfer eligibility.
• Receive monthly emails with updates on appointment availability and events Fabian will host or attend. 
• Get advice or help with transfer aspirations.

Brown Bag with Brian

Join Chancellor Brian King at an upcoming Brown Bag session at SCC! These informal gatherings are an excellent opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to engage directly with Chancellor King on the topics that matter most to them or the college community as a whole. Bring your lunch and join us for a fruitful discussion.

Labor Day is Sept. 2
