Black Student Success Week is April 25-29

Black Student Success Week invites employees from across the California Community College system to examine the resources and programs that support Black student success. This year’s theme is “A Vision for Black Student Success: Creating a New Landscape to Succeed.” The 2022 Black Student Success Week will focus on new approaches to ensure Black and African American students succeed at California Community Colleges as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Revision to Enrollment Process

Students who take in-person classes or access on-campus services must be fully vaccinated for COVID19 or have an approved exemption on file. As part of our efforts to help reduce barriers for students to enroll in our colleges, Los Rios has revised the enrollment process for in-person classes to allow all students to enroll in in-person classes and provide proof of vaccination (or an approved exemption) prior to the start of classes. This change will take effect starting in Summer 2022, and any student who is not cleared two weeks before the start of the term will be dropped from their in-person classes.

This change will help more students get the classes they need and make progress on their academic goals, while still ensuring that our campuses are healthy and safe for all students, faculty, and staff.

Anthro Stories Alumni Spotlight

Cosumnes River College’s Anthropology department invites you to an Anthro Stories presentation featuring CRC alumni on Monday, May 2, at 3:30 pm on Zoom. Anthro Stories is a speaker series that profiles the experiences of anthropologists and their diverse work. This event features alumni who will share their post-CRC academic journeys to university and into the workforce. Alumni Marcos Martinez, Nikoletta Karapanos, and Ella Lockhart will discuss how they navigated their challenges and discovered opportunities while working toward their degrees during the COVID-19 pandemic. All are welcome to attend.

FLC Presents “As You Like It” May 12-15

Join Folsom Lake College’s Falcon's Eye Theatre for an outdoor performance of As You Like It, a comedy by William Shakespeare adapted by Jamie Van Camp, starting Thursday, May 12, and running through Sunday, May 15 at David Girard Vineyards in Placerville. Attendees can also purchase a boxed dinner from ARREZ! Restaurant to enjoy prior to the performance. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $25 for general admission and a boxed dinner.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Sexual assault, also known as sexual violence, is one of the most serious, pervasive, yet underreported crimes in the world. According to the CDC, more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have or will experience sexual violence during their lifetimes, yet only 12% of victims report the incident to the authorities.

Wednesday, April 27 has been designated Denim Day to raise awareness and support for survivors of sexual violence. For information about the history and observance of Denim Day, please visit www.denimdayinfo.org.

Los Rios' WEAVE Confidential Advocate is available to confidentially support or provide information to students or employees who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, or sexual harassment.

Interviewing Skills Workshop

Students are invited to meet with State Fund recruiters and learn great interviewing tips at a virtual workshop on Tuesday, April 26, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. State Fund is California’s largest provider of workers’ compensation insurance and a vital asset to California businesses. Students need to register in advance on Handshake, Los Rios’ online job and internship platform.

Congratulations to West Sacramento Dean Andrea Gaytan for being featured in the California Aggie in their feature recognizing influential women in the Davis community.

“Gaytan currently works with UC Davis and Sacramento City College on the California volunteer service grants project. She said that this project will connect students to volunteer opportunities with different nonprofit and public agencies in the sustainability, basic needs and K-12 education sectors. For their work, students would receive living stipends. Gaytan said that working on this project feels like a culminating moment in her career.”

Re-Emerging Scholars, Supporting Formerly Incarcerated Students

Sacramento City College has received a grant for $172,000 from the Educational Services and Support Division of the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office to support the Rising Scholars program. As part of the college’s Re-Emerging Scholars Program, Rising Scholars is committed to serving students who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. We provide a variety of resources that help build solid pathways from incarceration to higher education — and beyond.

In addition, the Los Rios Colleges Foundation recently received $40,000 from the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors. The one-time funding is allocated to CRC, FLC, and SCC’s PREP/Rising Scholars/Reemerging Scholars programs and will focus on providing housing, basic needs, and scholarships for our recently incarcerated students.
