César Chávez Day

On Friday, March 31 we celebrate and reflect on the life and legacy of César Chávez. Chávez made a lasting impact on America’s farmworkers through his work as a labor leader and civil rights activist. This holiday promotes community service in honor of Chávez's life and work.

New and Updated College Handbooks

Several of our college handbooks have recently been revised and updated, and we have a new handbook to add to our collection.

Research Handbook provides information, policies, and procedures regarding using the college's data dashboards, requesting data from the PRIE office, and conducting research studies at the college.

Planning Handbook provides information about our college's integrated planning framework, including college strategic planning, institution-wide plans, and area/unit planning.

Grants Handbook is a new addition. It provides information about how to identify potential grant opportunities, grant feasibility approval processes, and guidance for writing a strong grant application. The handbook also contains information about grant budgeting, project management, and grants closeout and institutionalization.

Encourage Your Students to Run for Leadership Positions

Petitions to run for the 2023 -2024 Student Elections are available until Thursday, March 30 at 5 p.m. All positions are available for the 2023-24 academic year. Meetings will take place in person in accordance with the Brown Act and students will be expected to attend candidate training. Students can learn more and apply at our Student Elections webpage.

Remind Students to Apply for Sacramento Valley College Corps

Please let students know that they should consider applying to be part of the Sacramento Valley College Corps! Deadline to apply is April 10.

Sacramento City College along with UC Davis, Sacramento State University, and Woodland Community College form the regional Sacramento Valley College Corps (SVCC).

One of the main goals of the program is to break down the barriers that can prevent low-income and undocumented students from participating in paid field placements and community-based internships. It aims to include about 230 AB 540-eligible undocumented students among the 1,000 interns and is planning specific efforts to reach low-income and undocumented students. The Sacramento Valley interns will provide support to address the three focus areas of the College Corps program: K-12 education, including COVID-related learning loss; climate action; and food insecurity. Specific placements will be co-designed with the community partners and schools.

There are several virtual info sessions coming up in the next few weeks that will be helpful for students who are interested and might have questions.

Clothing Swap Today!

Students, faculty, and the community are invited to participate in our clothing swap today, Monday, March 27, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Quad.

No clothing donations are required. Everyone is welcome to take something home! Come learn about the dangers of fast fashion, and how we can all work together to create a more sustainable fashion system within our community. Swap out your clothing in good, wearable condition for new-to-you pieces from your peers!

Distinguished Service Award 2023

The deadline the Distinguished Service Award is this Thursday, March 30.

The Distinguished Service Award is one of the most prestigious awards offered at Sacramento City College and dates back to the early years of the college. Two students will be selected. This award comes with a $1,500 scholarship. Recipients will be honored in various ways including on the SCC website and social media.

Lavender Graduation

Los Rios' 2023 Lavender Graduation will be held online on Friday, May 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, giving our graduating LGBTQIA+ students a space to celebrate their educational achievements and an opportunity to share stories of struggles and triumphs along the way. Please encourage students who would like to participate to register by Friday, April 21.

Acceptance and Commitment Skills Group

All students are invited to join Los Rios Mental Health and Wellness Services for an Acceptance and Commitment Skills Group meeting virtually on Wednesdays from March 29 through May 3 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm via Zoom. This group will offer students dedicated time for exploring areas of their life where they would like to be more present and teach them how to practice acceptance and make clear commitments to positive change.

To get the most out of this group, they should plan to attend all sessions, but note that this is not a requirement; they are welcome to join for as many dates as they can. No registration is required.

SCC Student Selected to Participate in NASA Virtual Experience

NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) selected Sacramento City College student, Kate Rainey, to attend the NCAS Mission 2: Exploration Simulation, March 29 – April 4, 2023.

Rainey's successful completion of a five-week online NCAS course earned them a spot to participate in the online Mission 2: Exploration Simulation. Rainey is one out of hundreds of community college students from across the country to participate in the virtual experience.

Selected community college students learn more about NASA’s missions and careers in science and engineering throughout the virtual experience. Students form teams and design a mission to explore Moon or Mars. Each student team joins a design team, fulfills a team role, manages a budget, and develops communication and outreach strategies. Students also attend events hosted by NASA subject matter experts, receive information on how to apply for NASA internships, and virtually tour NASA’s unique facilities during the event.
