Caring Campus Coffee: Student Services Edition

Join us Tuesday, Oct. 10, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Student Services Building (STS) for a cup of coffee, a small snack, and some time with Classified Professionals to learn about the important student success-focused programs, practices, and workload that goes on in the STS.

As part of our Caring Campus ongoing behavioral commitments, we invite you to take part in this effort to "Know Other Departments" and share the ways you are practicing Caring Campus in your own daily campus efforts.

MET Students Benefit from Generous Donation

Thanks to a $100,000 grant from Johnson Control Inc (JCI), SCC has been able to offer scholarships, tool bags, textbooks and loaner laptops for all MET program students! The partnership with JCI has been ongoing, with the company increasing their contribution from last year's $90,000 grant. The funding will change lives, supporting our MET students in their pursuit of careers in engineering, technicians and community leaders.

POV: It's Your First Year at SCC!

We are excited to invite all potential future students and first year students to participate in Panther POV on Thursday, October 12, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the Quad (rain plan: Student Center).

Panther POV is an opportunity for prospective students and their families to learn about SCC's academic programs and get connected with resources on campus. There will be lots of information available and program representatives will be onsite to answer questions. If you know someone who may be interested in enrolling at SCC, encourage them to come see the Panther POV!

Second Eight-Week Classes Start Oct. 12

Late-start classes begin the week of Thursday, October 12. It’s not too late for students to pick up one more class and make even more progress this semester! The full list of available late-start classes is on the Los Rios class schedule page. Encourage students to enroll now! 

Students to Vote on Measure A

Los Rios will hold a Student Special Election on Measure A: Extending the Los Rios-RT Universal Transit Pass Program on Tuesday, October 10 and Wednesday, October 11 via eServices. Measure A is a proposed extension of the existing Universal Transit Pass (UTP) program. The UTP program gives eligible students access to a semester-long Regional Transit (RT) pass. If approved, this measure would extend the UTP program through December 31, 2028. Students currently paying the UTP would not see any increase in their per unit fees. National Tutor Appreciation Week is from Monday, October 2 through Friday, October 6. This week is celebrated at colleges, universities, and private tutoring centers across the country. This is a great time to show your gratitude for the tremendous work that SCC tutors do in assisting students in their courses! Transfer Days Wrap-Up

Los Rios Transfer Days wrap up this week with the final events on Wednesday, October 4 at Folsom Lake College and Thursday, October 5 at Cosumnes River College. This is a great opportunity for students to meet with transfer representatives from more than 50 colleges and universities!

Clean Slate Expungement Clinic

Los Rios' Rising Scholars/Re-Emerging Scholars programs are teaming up with The Access Project’s Clean Slate Program to provide free expungement services for community college students on Thursday, October 5 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at American River College in the Instructional Technology Center. IMPORTANT: To get started, students MUST register in advance at AccessProjectCA.org/RSN.

As part of the clinic, a representative from The Access Project will assist students in obtaining their CA DOJ report (“RAP sheet”), prepare court petitions for the students’ eligible convictions, and work with students to create the personal statement that must be submitted to the court with the petitions. Ethics Symposium- The Ethics of AI

Please join us for the 18th Annual CRC-CPPE Fall Ethics Symposium, The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence October 9 and 10.

This student-centered event is interdisciplinary, free, and open to the general public.

A technological revolution in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is underway. At bottom, to borrow a description from IBM, AI "leverages computers and machines to mimic the problem-solving and decision-making capabilities of the human mind." Our speakers will offer perspectives on the prospects and ethical challenges around the use of AI.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is held each October as a way to unite advocates across the nation in their efforts to end domestic violence. Communities and advocacy organizations across the country connect with the public and one another throughout the month to raise awareness about the signs of abuse and ways to stop it, and to uplift survivor stories.

This is a chance for all of us to unite in the work to end domestic violence. We invite advocates, loved ones, supporters, and others to join together in solidarity, and to listen to and uplift survivors directly. With so many people speaking in a unified voice throughout October, we can raise our collective awareness about domestic violence to end abuse for good.
