Save the Date for Giving Tuesday!
Giving Tuesday is November 29th, and we would love to celebrate this season of gratitude and giving with our fellow Los Rios employees. As part of the Los Rios family, we know you have a big heart for our students and that you want to ensure that students of color, LGBTQIA+, first generation, low-income, foster youth, undocumented students, veterans, and other vulnerable populations have the support they need to succeed. That’s why it is so important that we work together to break down barriers and help students feel at home on our campuses through our Affinity Programs (including centers such as RASA, ASHE, API, Pride, Veterans, etc.).
The SCC Student Equity and Success Fund supports the Affinity Programs at SCC by providing funds not otherwise available through state or federal funds to help them build community. But you don’t have to wait to feel the joy of giving! You can celebrate by giving now to the SCC Student Equity and Success Fund or a program closest to your heart.

Remote Work Agreements
The Los Rios Remote Work policy – which outlines the process for employees and their supervisors to agree on remote work allowances by mutual consent – will be extended for the Spring semester (ending on May 26, 2023). The explicit intent of these agreements is to provide maximum flexibility in how we serve students, and providing the best possible experience for students should be at the center of each individual decision regarding remote work. Each employee working remotely, and their supervisor, must fill out a new Remote Work Agreement and submit it to their supervisor for approval.

Alternate Schedules
Alternate Schedules will no longer be available during the Fall and Spring semesters, but will again be available for employees (also by mutual agreement with their Supervisor) this Summer. With a significant amount of remote work during the pandemic, Alternate Schedules were temporarily expanded but as we return to a greater on-campus presence we are returning to the long-time pre-pandemic practice.

Financial Aid Redesign
Thank you to everyone who participated and provided feedback to the Financial Aid Redesign process over the past year. As a result of the many conversations on this topic, as well as the report from third party experts, we expect to make reporting changes in Financial Aid offices effective January 1.
Each college’s Financial Aid Supervisor will now report to the districtwide Associate Vice President of Financial Aid. Staff at each college will continue to report to their college supervisor, and there will continue to be a robust in-person presence of financial staff and services on campus.
Existing colleges processes relating to Financial Aid referrals or working with Financial Aid staff to support student needs are still in place. We look forward to sharing more information about improvements to processes and metrics for customer service and success in the months ahead. Please contact your college Financial Aid Supervisor if you have any questions.

Hiring the Best and Equity Representative Training
Any employee who wants to serve on a hiring or interview committee must first complete the Hiring the Best Training course. In addition, any employee who wants to serve as the equity representative on a hiring committee must first complete the Equity Representative Training course. If you need to complete your training, check out the calendar for a list of available HTB/ER training from November - February (with more to come later in the spring!).

'Smoke Songs' Film Screening and Create Art
Join us in celebrating Native American Heritage Month with a screening of the short film "Smoke Songs: A Native American Punk Band with a Message" on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 2 p.m. in South Gym 234.
Materials will also be provided to create art that represents student and staff’s Tribal Nations, identity, and cultural sources of empowerment to be displayed in the center.
All students who attend will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a $20 DoorDash gift card.

Come join the Sacramento City College Choirs as they present their Festival of Music concert Sunday, December 4 at 5 p.m. in PAC 150. The event features heartwarming festive music from faculty and student musicians. They will perform works by Craig Hella Johnson, Sara Bareilles, Joni Mitchell, and Johann Sebastian Bach.

The Ethics of Providing Healthcare
The 17th Annual Fall Ethics Symposium “The Ethics of Providing Healthcare” takes place December 2 from 9 am-4:20 pm in Sacramento State’s Redwood Room.
Hosted by CRC and Sac State’s Center for Practical and Professional Ethics, this event will have a variety of speakers talking about the healthcare system.
Everyone wants a health care system that is efficient and just, where these criteria are compatible with the idea that anyone who needs care will receive it. But it’s important to pay attention to the supply-side--where the specific services will come from and how they will be delivered.
The speakers will offer their perspectives on how we could do better in the U.S. delivering the services that most expect.
Opening remarks from CRC President Ed Bush, Sac State President Robert Nelsen, and Symposium Executive Director Rick Schubert.
Topics include:
- “Facing Goliath: How State Policymakers Can Address the Harms from Healthcare Consolidation,” with speaker Katherine L. Gudiksen, Senior Health Policy Researcher for The Source on Healthcare Price and Competition.
- “Ban, Subsidize, Mandate: Health Policy in the U.S.” with speaker James Bailey, an Associate Professor of Economics at Providence College.
- “Distributive Injustice: Race, Age, and Government Healthcare Spending,” with speaker Melissa Alexander, Professor at the University of Wyoming College of Law.
- “Defining Affordable Health,” with speaker Govind Persad, Assistant Professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.
Each presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer period allowing for extensive audience participation. This event is free and open to the general public.

Triple Respiratory Season
This year is shaping up to be a year of three epidemics for respiratory diseases. Historically, influenza has been the one respiratory disease we needed to worry about, but over the last several years, COVID-19 has become the main epidemic. This year, influenza is coming back, COVID-19 remains serious, and respiratory syncytial virus, RSV, is also increasing dramatically.
Both COVID-19 and Influenza have vaccines to help protect against the most serious of complications, including hospitalizations and deaths, but RSV does not.
The one thing that can help to protect against all three of these, as well as the common cold, is wearing appropriate, approved masks. Recent research has shown the protective ability of masks. I strongly recommend wearing masks in public and getting vaccines--particularly being "up to date" with COVID vaccines and boosters and getting this year’s seasonal influenza vaccine.
Free COVID antigen tests and a limited supply of influenza vaccines are available at your campus Student Health and Wellness Center.

World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day, designated on 1 December every year since 1988, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations, and individuals around the world observe the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control.
