Recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day

On Monday, October 14, we observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day—a time to honor the diverse cultures, histories, and enduring presence of Native Nations, including the Miwok, Maidu, and Nisenan peoples, on whose ancestral lands our campus resides.

Land Acknowledgment Statement

SCC takes this moment to share the official campus Land Acknowledgement Statement, which has been carefully crafted in consultation with local Tribes to pay respect to the Tribal Nations. The campus encourages everyone to reflect on this statement and recognize the history, resilience, and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples:

“We acknowledge the land currently occupied by Sacramento City College as the traditional home of the Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan people. These sovereign people have been caretakers of the area since time immemorial. Despite centuries of genocide and occupation, the Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan people continue as vibrant and resilient federally recognized and unrecognized tribes, bands, and rancherias. Today, we honor and recognize our Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan tribal neighbors for their contributions as the caretakers of the Sacramento Valley and honor their sustained existence. It is with their blessing and continued guidance that Sacramento City College seeks to provide an accessible, equitable, and supportive institution of learning and experience.”

In reflecting on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, SCC commits to acknowledging, engaging, and supporting the sovereignty and visibility of Tribal Nations today and every day.

Election 2024 Forum

With Election Day around the corner, we encourage you to participate in a student-driven discussion about the upcoming November 5 elections hosted by the SCC Political Science Department and the SCC Honors Program! This event will take place on Monday, October 14, from 12:00 to 1:20 pm in BUS 203.

SCC Political Science experts will answer your questions on the national, state, and local election issues that matter to you. This forum offers a unique chance to dive deeper into the topics shaping this critical election season.

Together, we’ll cover important details for serving on hiring committees in our “Hiring the Best” training, followed by a comprehensive session on becoming an effective Equity Representative.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is held each October as a way to unite advocates across the nation in their efforts to end domestic violence. Communities and advocacy organizations across the country connect with the public and one another throughout the month to raise awareness about the signs of abuse and ways to stop it and to uplift survivor stories.

This is a chance for all of us to unite in the work to end domestic violence. We invite advocates, loved ones, supporters, and others to join together in solidarity and to listen to and uplift survivors directly. With so many people speaking in a unified voice throughout October, we can raise our collective awareness about domestic violence to end abuse for good.

Soroptimist "Live Your Dream" Scholarship

The local Soroptimist International chapters are seeking grant applications from women who serve as the primary earners for their families and are in need of financial assistance to continue their education or training. Live Your Dream Award finalists will be awarded up to $16,000 to help offset tuition costs, purchase books, get transportation, or find reliable childcare so they can worry less about how to pay their bills and focus on reaching their dreams. Applications are due by Friday, November 15. 

Write Your Future: A Guide to a Standout Resume

Students can get tips on how to freshen up their resumes at an online workshop Friday, October 18, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. This fun and dynamic workshop will show students how to transform their resume into a powerful tool that will open doors to their dream job!
