Latinx, Chicanx, Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, from September 15 to October 15, we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and significant contributions of Americans with ancestry from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. September 15 marks a key date as it commemorates the independence anniversaries of Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Additionally, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Look for activities across the Los Rios colleges commemorating this month!

RSVP for the Joan Didion Learning Resource Center Reception!
We are excited to invite faculty and staff to a special reception on Tuesday, September 24, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., as we celebrate the renaming of the Learning Resource Center to the Joan Didion Learning Resource Center. Please RSVP by tomorrow, September 17, to help us plan for refreshments
This renaming honors Joan Didion, a Sacramento native, SCC alumna, and internationally acclaimed author. The renaming is made possible through a generous donation from the Didion family and the Sacramento Historical Society.
The reception will include refreshments, a new display on Joan Didion’s life, and a short program beginning at 5:00 p.m. We are thrilled to announce that members of the Didion family will also be joining us for this special event.

SCC Proudly Hosts Sacramento Poderosas Mural
We are excited to announce that the Sacramento Poderosas Mural is currently at Sacramento City College! Designed and painted by artists Ruby Chacón and Isabel Martinez, this powerful mural brings awareness to historically marginalized Chicana/Latina Poderosas, highlighting the role of women of color as agents of change.
The mural is a vibrant reminder of the importance of these stories in shaping a more equitable and humane future. You can see the mural Friday, September 13 through Friday, December 13 on the 2nd floor of the LRC.

Los Rios Transfer Days
Los Rios Transfer Days are back! From Monday, September 23 through Friday, September 26, students across all four Los Rios colleges will have the opportunity to connect with representatives from over 50 universities. Whether students are exploring transfer options or ready to apply, this is a fantastic chance to meet university reps, ask questions, and plan their academic futures.

Help Students Write Their Future: A Resume Workshop for Career Success
Encourage your students to take their resume to the next level! On Friday, September 20, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, we’ll be hosting an engaging online workshop to help students build standout resumes for their job searches. From crafting a compelling story to fine-tuning skills for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), this workshop will give students the tools they need to showcase their value and experience.

Chancellor Brian King will be hosting monthly office hours at each Los Rios college. This is an opportunity for faculty, staff or students to drop in and talk to Chancellor King about any topic(s) important to you or your college in general.

Community Sign-Up for Los Rios Emergency Alerts
Spread the word that members of the community – such as vendors, neighboring schools and businesses, and parents – can sign up to receive Los Rios Emergency Alerts. To receive regular, ongoing alerts, folks just need to text LOSRIOS to 67283 from their mobile phone.
Campus visitors can also sign up to receive temporary alerts. This can include people who are attending athletics or arts events on our campuses. To sign up for temporary alerts, they need to text LREVENT to 67283 from their mobile phone. People will be automatically unsubscribed after 48 hours.

City Road Closures 9/16-9/18
The City of Sacramento Department of Public Works will be doing roadway pavement work along Sutterville Road starting today, 9/16 – 9/18. The work will result in alternate road and traffic lane closures.
Please note the details provided below by the City of Sacramento Department of Public Works and plan your commute accordingly. Questions should be directed to the Department of Public Works by calling 311 or 916-264-5011.
Dates: 9/16/24 – 9/18/24
Hours: 8 pm – 6 am daily (through the night)
Traffic Impacts: Eastbound traffic lanes along Sutterville Road will be alternately closed to traffic between 22nd Street and the 24th Street Overpass. Motorists should drive with caution, follow provided traffic control and detour signs, and expect traffic delays.
Detour Northbound Sutterville Bypass:
- Turn left at 23rd Street and go South to 15th Avenue; then
- Turn right and go West to Freeport Boulevard; then
- Turn right and go North to Sutterville Road.
Detour Southbound Sutterville Bypass:
- Turn right at Sutterville Road and go West to Freeport Boulevard; then
- Turn left and go South to 15th Avenue; then
- Turn left and go East to 23rd Street; then
- Turn left and go North to Sutterville Bypass
