Welcome Back! Spring 2025 Convocation Recap

Spring 2025 Convocation welcomed staff back with a renewed focus on connection, innovation, curiosity and student success.

President Garcia opened the event with Sacramento City College’s land acknowledgment statement, reaffirming our commitment, respect, and gratitude for citizens of Tribal Nations and their enduring relationship to the land.

Key Highlights:

AI Professional Development: Exciting new efforts and opportunities in artificial intelligence are on the horizon.

Disability Cultural Center: SCC proudly introduced this new space to come later this year, and encourages exploration of disability culture and allyship.

Accessibility Best Practices: Faculty received tips to enhance accessibility and support student learning.

Panther Cares Center: Beautiful new center and services include housing consultants, CalFresh assistance, and food distribution to meet students' basic needs.

Student Health and Wellness: With a new Mental Health Supervisor and a campus location in the Cosmetology building, the center continues to expand support for student well-being.

President Garcia addressed questions from the SCC community, emphasizing the importance of personal connections in fostering a thriving college environment.

The event concluded with an inspiring talk by Scott Shigeoka, author of Seek and a renowned curiosity expert, who shared how curiosity and innovation can drive both personal and professional growth.

Free One-on-One Tutoring Support

Peer mentors and tutors are ready to help make this semester a success! Tutors can provide support to your students in a variety of subjects. Encourage students to start early and build a relationship with their tutor to get help with subject-specific questions, assignments, or writing. To schedule an appointment, direct students to the tutoring webpage.

The Road to Graduation

Students who plan to graduate or receive a certificate at the end of the Spring 2025 semester need to submit their graduation petition by the Friday, March 7 deadline.

For those students who want to meet with a counselor before filing their petition, encourage them to make their counseling appointment. Students can complete their online grad petition now.

The Library is available to support students with a wide variety of in-person and online resources and services this spring including:

Students can check out and pick up physical books, including some textbooks. Search OneSearch to find what’s available for checkout.

Librarians are available 24/7 via chat. Access this service inside OneSearch or on the library’s homepage. Students are encouraged to make an appointment for research assistance or send the librarians an email for support.

📚E-Books, Journals, & Streaming Video

The library has an excellent (and growing) collection of electronic content to complement your class discussions and research material to help students ace course assignments! Visit the library’s Research Databases page to browse.

To celebrate the start of the new semester, we'll be offering a special promotion from Tuesday, January 21, through Friday, February 28. SCC students and employees can visit the Oasis Coffee Bar once a day, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm, and receive a free 8 oz. cup of Starbucks coffee or tea. Responding to Immigration Authorities on Campus

The Los Rios Police Department (LRPD) is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all students and staff, regardless of immigration status.

Additionally, our District’s Board of Trustees has adopted policies aligned with the California Value Act (SB 54), ensuring that no Los Rios law enforcement resources are used for immigration enforcement or information gathering activities.
