Undocumented Student Action Week

Serving the largest number of undocumented students in the state, California Community Colleges are committed to serving ALL students, regardless of immigration status. In its 6th year, Undocumented Student Action Week, October 17-21, is a system-wide campaign to advocate and provide support resources for our undocumented student population. Emergency Grants for Students

We know that life is unexpected and students may experience a sudden and unexpected emergency that threatens their ability to continue their education, that’s where the Student Emergency Fund can help! The Student Emergency Fund provides grants of up to $1,000 with no repayment obligation. Direct students to visit the Student Emerg e n c y Fu n d webpage for eligibility requirements and to apply.

Here is how the Emergency Grant has helped students continue their education:

“Thank you to all who helped grant me this financial help. It was very stressful to find that something like this happened to me despite me planning ahead with my counselor, and now I feel so much relief. I appreciate your consideration so that now I am able to finish my summer classes and apply to Monterey in August!”

“I started my studies while I was homeless. During this time, I was able to get out of homelessness and focus on rebuilding my life. It will help me continue to get the essentials that I need to continue to be successful in my career in Cybersecurity.”

Be Well at SCC

Re-connect and practice wellness with a series of calming activities in the Quad and Student Center on Wednesday, October 26 from Noon to 2 p.m.

Relax with nail work from the Nail Technology students, art crafts from the Art Department, yoga, a trauma informed pedagogy workshop for faculty, a mindfulness workshop, and more! You will also find more information about how to access SCC's wellness services and programs.

International Pronouns Day

Celebrate International Pronouns Day October 19 with button-making, art activities, and games from Noon to 1 p.m. in the Quad.

Healthy Relations Beading Circle with WEAVE

Join us next week on Thursday, October 20 at 3 p.m. in South Gym SOG 119 for "Healthy Relations Talking Circle with WEAVE (Native American Student Support Program)" with WEAVE. Learn about healthy and unhealthy relationships with Los Rios WEAVE advocate, while also having the opportunity to create some powerful art and activities for empowerment.

Upcoming Fire Drills

As part of our ongoing emergency preparedness efforts, Sacramento City College plans to conduct a series of fire drills on the SCC main campus on Tuesday, October 18 from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Alarm activation will be done at random times.

During the drills the Los Rios Police Department and college officials will assist you with exiting the building, assembling a safe distance away at established evacuation sites, waiting while the building is reviewed, and giving you the all-clear to reenter the building.

Depending on what buildings you may be in throughout the day, you may be participating in multiple drills. We encourage everyone to review the evacuation procedures prior to October 18. Drills might be postponed or rescheduled due to weather or other factors. Thank you for your participation and support!

New Campus Printing System

The Library and most other campus printing locations are using a new system called PaperCut. To print, and add or transfer money, you will first need to create your Papercut account. To login and create an account make sure you are on campus with your device and logged in to the Los Rios WiFi (Network: LRCCD). Once you have created an account you can add money to your account online using a credit card or you can add money to your PaperCut account with cash or a credit card at a pay station. Please note you will not receive a physical card - this system is entirely digital.

Still have money on your print or ID card from the old system? Don’t lose it! You can transfer the money to your new PaperCut account using one of 2 kiosk locations:

Interview Strategies Workshop

Encourage students to attend a Zoom Interview Strategies workshop on Tuesday, October 18, at 12:00 pm. A successful interview will help students land that dream job. This workshop will offer tips and advice on how to interview like a pro. All students and the community are welcome. Students need to register in advance.

Generation Hope Webinar

All are invited to the CRC Nest Family Resource Center’s Generation Hope webinar on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This workshop will extend the conversation of supporting students' families in the Los Rios Community College district. All Los Rios employees are welcome to attend.

Do you enjoy working with people, learning new things, and sharing that knowledge with others? Do you have a passion for astronomy? If so, consider applying to become a docent for the Community Observatory located at Folsom Lake College’s El Dorado Center in Placerville. Docents are volunteers of all ages who serve as guides to Observatory visitors and share information on the telescopes, the universe, deep space objects, stars, and planets.

The Community Observatory will train and mentor docents through their learning period by having them shadow experienced docents. Docents are then required to volunteer a minimum of two nights a month (the Observatory is open Friday/Saturday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30 pm in Fall/Winter, and from 9:00 to 11:00 pm in Late Spring/Summer).
