Scholarship Readers Needed!

The scholarship application period closes March 3, and we will need volunteers to help read through the applications.

Please consider being a scholarship reader to help select students who will benefit immensely from scholarship funding.

Free Tax Filing Assistance

The United Way offers free tax assistance for individuals/students. Options are available for online and in-person filing, for both federal and state, at the MyFreeTaxes by United Way website.

Distinguished Service Award 2023

Let students know they can apply for the SCC Distinguished Service Award, which comes with a $1,500 scholarship. It is one of the most prestigious awards offered at Sacramento City College and dates back to the early years of the college. Two students will be selected.

The award is open to students graduating or transferring at the end of the academic year, who have demonstrated a commitment to serving the community.

Recipients will be honored in various ways including on the SCC website and on social media.

FAFSA/CADAA Deadline March 2

Continuing students should plan ahead for the 2023-2024 school year and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) by the deadline on Thursday, March 2!

Submitting their application by the deadline helps ensure they receive the maximum amount of financial aid possible. Applying early will also help ensure that they are ready for fall and don’t see delays in receiving their financial aid.

If they need help with their application, please refer them to the Financial Aid Office for support!

SCC Alum Attends State of the Union Address

Rep. Ami Bera brought former Sacramento City College student Mervin Brookins, founder of Brother 2 Brother Mentoring, as his guest at President Joe Biden's State of the Union Address.

Born and raised in Sacramento, CA, Mervin Brookins was a standout football player at Grant High School and Sacramento City College. After a brief semester at Southern Oregon State University, Brookins spent 21 years in prison after a series of poor decisions in his youth. Upon returning home, he committed his life to being a positive influence and role model in his community.

Brookins founded Brother 2 Brother Mentoring, a non-profit organization which inspires and empowers at-risk Sacramento-area youth and provides gang intervention and prevention.

February is American Heart Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but heart disease is preventable and controllable. Heart disease affects all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and excessive alcohol use.

Do you know how to keep your heart healthy? You can take an active role in reducing your risk for heart disease by eating a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, and managing your cholesterol and blood pressure. This is a great chance to start some heart-healthy habits!
