Looking Ahead to a Great Semester!
We all know what a bumpy road it’s been for us, our students, and community since COVID first hit. Through it all, YOU have been key to our ability to continue to serve students and help them on their road to graduation, transfer, and career. This semester is the first time we’ve seen a positive shift in enrollment since before leaving our campuses in March 2020 — and a reason to celebrate! This is great news for our classes and we are thrilled to see all the students, new and returning, who are joining us in-person and online. We couldn’t do this work without you. Let’s keep up the momentum and continue to support our returning students on their journey and welcome new students to this great campus community!

Black History Month
February is Black History Month and the theme for 2023 focuses on Black Resistance.
From the Association for the Study of African American Life and History:
"African Americans have resisted historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial pogroms, and police killings since our arrival upon these shores. These efforts have been to advocate for a dignified self-determined life in a just democratic society in the United States and beyond the United States political jurisdiction."
Beginning in February, there will be a series of events planned to celebrate and share Black wellness, art, literature, music, and community across the Los Rios colleges. Events planned at SCC will be hosted in the ASHE Center (Student Center 104) and are as follows:

Student Equity & Achievement Program (SEAP) 2023-24 Funding Now Available
The Student Equity and Achievement Program was established in Education Code (EC) 78222 with the intent of supporting the system-wide goal of eliminating achievement gaps through the lens of equity. The office of the Associate Vice President of Student Services is seeking to fund innovative programs and activities focused on closing the achievement gaps of SCC’s disproportionately impacted (DI) student groups.
In review of SCC’s student success data, Black/African American students have significantly lower achievement rates when compared to their counterparts. SCC has centered the needs of Black/African American students and prioritized closing their achievement gaps. This funding opportunity is available for individuals and groups. Funding is allocated on a year to year basis. Applications will be evaluated based on their alignment with SCC’s equity goals (see below) and their ability to demonstrate strategies designed to support our DI populations.

The office of the Associate Vice President of Student Service will notify applicants in May of their funding status. Funding request responses will be sent to the email address included in the application. Those applicants who secure funding will be required to attend a SEAP expenditure workshop in August.

The deadline for adjunct faculty to make any changes or enroll in coverage is Tuesday, January 31, 2023 for coverage effective March 1, 2023.

Los Rios WEAVE Confidential Advocate
Andrea Becerra-Lara is the Los Rios WEAVE Confidential Advocate and her role is to support students and employees at all four Los Rios colleges who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault/harassment, or sex trafficking. This semester at SCC Andrea is available by appointment for in-person meetings or virtually. Virtual hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Andrea is also available for staff training and classroom presentations. The goal during these events are to engage staff and students in trauma-informed conversations about topics such as domestic violence, sexual assault and consent, healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, and bystander intervention. During these educational presentations, students will also learn about the support Andrea can offer as the WEAVE Advocate and what resources she can connect them to.

Internship Info Session: Summer Internships With The Bureau of Land Management
During the summer, ABPA Institute partners with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for an 11-week, paid Resource Assistants Internships with housing provided in national BLM offices. The objective of the program is to provide career experiences for students in undergraduate or graduate degree programs, who might seek employment with federal agencies in the Department of the Interior (DOI).
We will discuss the list of our current opportunities throughout the U.S. with The Bureau of Land Management, share an insight perspective from our previous interns, and answer any questions!

Coaches Vs. Cancer
You’re invited to join the Cosumnes River College Hawks basketball teams in the Community and Athletic Center, as they take on rival Santa Rosa Junior College, Tuesday, January 31 beginning at 5:30pm for the annual Coaches vs. Cancer event.
The goal is to raise $1,500 for the fight against cancer. All gate sales, donations and entry fees will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to donate and place the name of a cancer survivor or a lost loved one on the Wall of Hope.
