SCC MESA Secures $1.7 Million State Grant

SCC MESA has received a $1.7 million state grant that will be allocated over a 6-year span (2021-2027). This is a significant increase – thanks to advocacy efforts and supportive legislators – of the annual MESA grant that historically has provided $74,000 in funding.

The funding will be used to purchase supplies including lab materials, textbooks and laptops. SCC MESA also will offer stipends to incentivize faculty involvement, send students to STEM professional development conferences, and develop a plan for offering stipends to MESA students. MESA also will bring back its internship program, which would be an additional paid stipend opportunity for students where they can work on a hands-on project with guidance from faculty mentors.

Student Leadership Meet and Greet January 18

Encourage students to stop by the Student Leadership Meet and Greet this Wednesday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center! This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn how they can get involved in student leadership and the decisions that are made at the college.

Graphic Design Student Awarded $2,750 Scholarship

Congratulations to SCC graphic design student Erin Gottis, who took home a $2,750 first place scholarship from Soroptomist Live Your Dream!

Gottis sought a career change after a work injury prevented her from returning to her old job. During the pandemic, she began studying graphic design and illustration, a field that not only appealed to her creative side but would offer more flexibility to work from home and care for her child who has Type 1 diabetes.

“This was the first time I felt like I was really doing something that suited me,” says Gottis. She says she found exceptional support from “the very best and most supportive professors” in Design and Digital Media.

Gottis is excited to continue pursuing her dream career with help from the scholarship. 

“The Soroptomist Live Your Dream Award will enable me to continue to pursue that dream by relieving some financial hardships I have caring for a child with an expensive disease,” she says. “I am thrilled to win this award and hopefully finish this next semester on the President's Highest Honor list just as I have the last two semesters. I hope all women in their 40s know they, too, can go back to school and change their lives for the better!”

Celebrating Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year will be celebrated on Sunday, January 22 this year. This is a holiday observed by many Asian cultures as a way to celebrate the beginning of a new year, based on the Lunar calendar as opposed to the Gregorian calendar. Although each culture celebrates a little differently, each year is assigned to a different animal from the Chinese Zodiac - 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit!

We Are A Mask-Friendly Campus

Masks are strongly encouraged but not required at Sacramento City College and all Los Rios district facilities. Los Rios supports any student or employee's choice to continue wearing a mask if it makes them more comfortable.

Scholarship Season is Here

Scholarship season opened last week, Friday, January 13, and runs through Friday, March 3. The Los Rios Colleges Foundation awards nearly $500,000 in scholarships to students each year.

To be eligible for a scholarship, students must:

• Have a Los Rios student ID number
• Be currently enrolled at one of the Los Rios colleges
• Recommended – Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the California Dream Act Application

Tech Tips for Employees and Students

Service Central

Students and employees can request IT services or get support for any IT issue through the online Service Central portal. This includes submitting a request for computer support, software (such as Microsoft Word), hardware (such as a Chromebook), or access to tools and systems (for example, Canvas). In this centralized online system, you’ll be able to track your requests online and ultimately receive faster responses from the IT team.

Canvas

Online and in-person classes both use the Canvas learning system. If you are new to Canvas, check out our Los Rios Canvas "how to" videos to get started or visit the Canvas Getting Started Guide. 

Apps and Software for Students

Check out the Technology Resources webpage for instructions on how to download software like Microsoft and SacRT’s Zip Pass, plus find information about low-cost or free internet and wi-fi.

Book Checkout

Students can check out physical books, including some textbooks, and pick them up via a safe and socially-distanced method. Search OneSearch to find what’s available for checkout. 

24/7 Chat

Librarians are available 24/7 via chat. Students can access this service inside OneSearch or on the library’s homepage. They can also make an appointment for research assistance or send the librarians an email (scroll to bottom of page).

E-books, Journals, & Streaming Video

The library has an excellent (and growing) collection of electronic content to complement your class discussions, and research material to help with your course assignments. Visit the library’s Research Databases page to browse.

The Road to Graduation

Students who plan to graduate or receive a certificate at the end of this semester (Spring 2023), need to submit their graduation petition by the Friday, March 3 deadline. For those students that want to meet with a counselor before filing their petition - encourage them to make their counseling appointment today! Students can complete their online grad petition now.
