March is Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month, a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture, and society. This is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to United States history. From Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States. Watch the video below to learn more about these trailblazers.

Open Educational Resources Nominations for Recognition

The Affordable Educational Resources Committee wants to recognize any employee or group at SCC that has contributed to OER adoption, promotion, or any other interesting projects related to OERs. Please nominate yourself or others. The brief shoutout will go out during Celebrate City in March.

Still We Rise: Core Competencies to Support African American Student Success

Presenter: Lasana O. Hotep | Target Audience: All | Duration: 2 hours

As colleges begin to examine their disaggregated data, they are discovering that some student groups are disproportionately impacted in terms of student success measures. African American students, in particular, have been overly represented in a host of success measures. Many of our institutions have developed learning communities, student success programs and other strategies to address the challenges faced by this student population. A significant number of these attempts are not developed within the context of reconciling the identity of the students with the data. Participants in this professional learning experience will have an opportunity to examine the African American student experience within both a historical and social context while being exposed to successful strategies to support African American student success.

Internship & Career Series

Students are invited to kick off a full month of Work Experience & Internship Program events with Internships 101 on Tuesday, March 2 at noon via Zoom.

Between March 8 and March 25, every weekday at noon will be a virtual employer information session or skills workshop. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about available, quality local internships and the organizations offering them.

This Friday, March 5, is the deadline for students to apply for the Los Rios Foundation scholarships. Please encourage students to apply! If you are submitting a letter of recommendation for a student and have questions, please see the FAQ.

Vaccination Resources

As was recently shared, Los Rios worked with Sacramento County Public Health officials to expand the local eligibility for education-sector vaccinations to include those in higher education. All Los Rios employees who live and/or work in Sacramento County are eligible to schedule an appointment to get vaccinated and the vaccine is available free of charge.

This does NOT mean, unfortunately, that vaccination appointments are immediately available or that there are enough doses, but it is an important step towards getting Los Rios faculty, staff, and administrators immunized soon.

Details on vaccine clinics for eligible childcare providers and educators can be found at the Sacramento County Public Health website. This site will be updated regularly as new appointments become available. Check often for available appointments and new clinics.

For those that were unable to attend the COVID-19 Vaccination Information Session held on February 17 with Los Rios Health and Wellness Services staff, including consulting physician Dr. Joseph Iser, a recorded version is now available.

SCC & UC Davis Awarded $27,500 Grant to Boost Transfer Equity

Sacramento City College and the University of California, Davis, have been jointly awarded a two-year grant from the American Association of Community Colleges Equity Transfer Initiative to increase transfer rates among African American, Hispanic, and first-generation students.

SCC and UC Davis are uniquely poised to provide a direct pipeline and partnership for transfer given the longstanding relationship between the two institutions, which includes the Sacramento City College Davis Center on the UC Davis campus. On average, SCC has approximately 20,000 students enrolled during a normal Fall term. The student demographics reflect a diverse community with 33.1% of the students being Hispanic and 10% of the students being African American.

Working in close partnership with UC Davis, SCC will provide overall leadership for planning and managing projected targets and outcomes. The $27,500 grant will be used to create a path to successful transfer for African American, Hispanic, and first-generation students.

“Equity and anti-racism work are a priority at Sacramento City College,” said Sacramento City College President Michael Gutierrez. “Our executive team and the entire college are committed to African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and first-generation student success, which includes improving the pathway for our students to transfer to top universities such as UC Davis.”

President Gutierrez's Office Hour

President Gutierrez will be holding an office hour twice a month during the Fall semester. Office hours will be held on the second Friday at 8:30 a.m. and fourth Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The next upcoming office hour will be Friday, March 12, 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Please look for an email prior to each event to sign up. Zoom info will be sent via a calendar invite on the day before the event to those who signed up.
