Albert Garcia Named New SCC President
Albert Garcia has been appointed as the new President of Sacramento City College by the Los Rios Community College Board of Trustees at their April 12, 2023 meeting. Garcia has served as the interim president of the college since July 1, 2022.
“I have been incredibly fortunate to have served SCC’s students and college community in so many ways over the years,” Garcia says. “This school gets in your blood. Now I have the honor to serve as president. I feel the opportunity this presents. I feel the obligation, and I’m thankful I get to work in this wonderful place with these fantastic people, doing all we can to make our students’ lives better.”
Garcia has held several different positions during his more than 30-year career at the college. He was hired as an English professor in 1991 and held two terms as English Department Chair. In 2004, he took a position as Dean of the Language and Literature Division, then in 2018, accepted a promotion as Vice President of Instruction. Additionally, in 2017, he held an interim role as Associate Vice Chancellor of Instruction at the Los Rios Workforce and Economic Development Center.

Now Accepting Submissions for Fall 23 FLEX/PD Week
It’s that time of year again to plan our upcoming Fall 23 FLEX/PD Week! Please submit your ideas If you:
- Have something you can offer or know a colleague who could (with some persuasion) share your work through PD
- Represent a group (a student center, club, specialized program, etc.) and want to have an open house
- Have had great ideas for a series of workshops and are ready to start
- Feel there is a genuine need for a particular topic or issue to be covered during FLEX week
We will sift through the responses to build a great FLEX week where we try to offer a variety of topics and modalities.
Deadline for responses is May 15, 2023 so we have time before everyone heads out for summer. We will not be taking late submissions, as there is a very limited timeframe to curate opportunities and plan for all the logistics of a hybrid professional learning environment.
Please include at minimum a working title, a synopsis, and facilitator information so we can introduce them. In proposals, we look for ideas that might be expanded to include a multi-dimensional audience to meet a wider range of interests, and those that we can help guide through an equity lens and focused on service to students. Outstanding Essay Contest Deadline Extension
Let students know about the SCC English Department's Essay Contest! The deadline has been extended to Friday, April 28. Students can win up to $1,000 for first place. The second place prize is $500 and third place is $300.

Bahram Babak Calligraphy Exhibit
Join us for an artist talk with Bahram Babak, Tuesday, April 25, 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in LRC 105. Babak's calligraphy works will be displayed in the LRC 3rd Floor gallery until Monday, May 8.
Bahram Babak was born in Afghanistan in 2006. He was in middle school in the city of Mazar-e Sharif when the Taliban took over Afghanistan after the hasty withdrawal of the US. His father was a well-known journalist and the editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper, Jahan-e Now in northern Afghanistan.
Bahram and his family were evacuated from Afghanistan in August 2021 and, after staying temporarily in Mexico City, he was relocated as a refugee to the US. He is currently a student at Center High School in Antelope, California. Bahram has a natural talent for calligraphy. He started Perso-Arabic calligraphy when he was 11 years old in Afghanistan. He does not have any official training in calligraphy. After immigrating to the US, he developed a unique style synthesizing Arabic and Latin scripts. His calligraphy represents a deep cultural admix of immigration, homeland, and exile.

City Theatre Presents 'The Alchemist'
"The Alchemist" opens Friday, April 28, and runs through Saturday, May 13.
When Master Lovewit leaves the city for the country, he puts his butler, Jeremy, in charge of his London house. Jeremy, masquerading as Captain Face, joins forces with fellow conman Subtle and prostitute Dol Common. Together they use the house as their headquarters to dupe the greedy and gullible residents of London with lofty promises. "The Alchemist" is a new adaptation of Ben Jonson’s most famous comedy.

Pride Lounge Monthly Events
This monthly event recurs every 4th Thursday of the month from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It will be a time for LGBTQIA+ students to come together in the Pride Center to build community and make new friends on campus. Pride Lounge will be held in-person in South Gym 234.

2023 Black Student Success Week
The 2023 Black Student Success Week is scheduled for April 24 through April 28. This year's theme is "Vision to Action: Building Systems and Structures for Black Student Success." The focus of the week-long event will be on successful approaches to ensuring Black and African American students succeed at California community colleges.
The schedule of virtual activities for the week include:
- The Black Hour: A series of daily webinars hosted from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
- The Student Hour: A series of daily webinars held from 5:00 to 6:00 pm on resources available to help current and prospective community college students succeed
- The BlackOut: A virtual advocacy day event held on April 27, 2023

Los Rios Marketing Team Takes Home 3 More Awards!
The Los Rios marketing team has won three additional awards for their most recent campaign efforts. At this year’s Community College Public Relations Organization (CCPRO) conference, the team won three Gold Awards, the highest recognition.
The first was for a short format college promotion video that was done for one of our career education programs, specifically, the SCC Design Program. You can view more of the career education videos on the district’s YouTube channel.
The other two were for a “See Your Future'' drone show which was a collaborative effort with 3fold Communications and the Sacramento Republic FC, and was designed to create an unforgettable experience for the audience. The two categories for those wins were for novelty advertising and a wild card.
The drone show was also recognized at the recent ADDY Awards, which was announced in a previous newsletter. As a reminder, we sponsored a 'See Your Future' Drone Show that took flight immediately following the Sac Republic’s last home game last October.
Kristie West, CRC Public Information Officer, said it is the partnerships that should be recognized with all the recent awards: “We are excited to receive these awards of course, but it takes a lot of people to put our marketing assets together and I am so thankful for our partnership with 3fold Communications and the Sacramento Republic, as well as with Stevenson Media who assisted with all our recent career education videos. These awards speak not only to creativity and technology, but the strong message Los Rios has for the community.”

Live from Florence
Are you curious what it is like to participate in or lead a study abroad program? Join a panel of Los Rios students and their faculty advisor live from Florence, Italy for a special presentation on Wednesday, April 26, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, online via Zoom. Students currently participating in the Florence Study Abroad program this semester will share their living and learning experiences. The students will also be joined by their Los Rios Faculty Advisor, FLC Professor Diane Carlson, who will provide the faculty perspective.

Searching for a Furever Home
The students in the CRC Veterinary Technology program are looking for furever homes for their colony of animals! Each year these animals live on campus and help train our veterinary technology students with the skills to support critical care to our furry friends. Meet and greet with the available dogs and cats April 30 from 10 am to 12 pm at CRC Soccer Field #2. Deposits will be taken that day and the pets can go to their furever homes the following week!
Adoption rates:
Dogs $50
Cats $30
All are spayed or neutered and current on vaccines. Dogs are also up to date on heartworm prevention medication.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Sexual assault, also known as sexual violence, is one of the most serious, pervasive, yet underreported crimes in the world. According to the CDC, more than 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have or will experience sexual violence during their lifetimes, yet only 12% of victims report the incident to the authorities.
Wednesday, April 26 has been designated Denim Day to raise awareness and support for survivors of sexual violence. For information about the history and observance of Denim Day, please visit www.denimdayinfo.org.
Los Rios' WEAVE Confidential Advocate is available to confidentially support or provide information to students or employees who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, or sexual harassment.
