Black History Month!
February is Black History Month and the theme for 2024 is Art as a Platform for Social Justice.
From the Association for the Study of African American Life and History:
"African American art is infused with African, Caribbean, and the Black American lived experiences. In the fields of visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression, the African American influence has been paramount. African American artists have used art to preserve history and community memory as well as for empowerment. Artistic and cultural movements such as the New Negro, Black Arts, Black Renaissance, hip-hop, and Afrofuturism, have been led by people of African descent and set the standard for popular trends around the world. In 2024, we examine the varied history and life of African American arts and artisans."
This February, there will be a series of online and in-person events planned to celebrate and share Black wellness, art, literature, music, and community across the Los Rios colleges. Activities kick off on Thursday, February 1 with The Los Rios Black Experience Virtual Forum: “Learning While Black: Self-Care in the Classroom” from 10:00 to 11:30 am presented online via Zoom, hosted by FLC’s BASE (Black. African. Student. Edu-Culture) program.

Districtwide Faculty Forum on Los Rios GE/AA Degree Changes
Join us Friday, Feb 2, 2:00 - 3:30 pm, on Zoom, for a discussion about the new General Education (GE) pattern and Associate Degree (AA) requirements. Panelists will include District Curriculum Coordinating Committee chair, Bill Simpson; Associate Vice Chancellor of Instruction Tammy Montgomery, members of the District Curriculum Committee, and District Academic Senate President Alisa Shubb (facilitator). Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback during the discussion. This session will be recorded.

Undocu-Knowledge Workshop Series: CHIRLA
Discover the wealth of assistance CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights) provides for immigration needs with an “Overview of CHIRLA Services” online workshop on Wednesday, January 31 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm via Zoom (register in advance). From DACA renewals to naturalization, family-based immigration, advanced parole, and insightful know-your-rights sessions, CHIRLA ensures students, faculty, and staff are equipped with reliable support. Hosted by the CRC Dream Center, SCC Undocu-Resource Center, FLC Undocu-Falcons Center, ARC Undocu-Connections, and Los Rios Undocumented Student Support.
Open to all Los Rios students, faculty, staff, and the community.

The Los Rios WEAVE Confidential Advocate role aims to support students and employees at all four Los Rios colleges who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault/harassment, or sex trafficking. All-Gender Restrooms Available on Campus
For the convenience of the SCC community, there are 11 all-gender restrooms available on the main campus. All-gender restrooms are single-user facilities that are available to students, employees and visitors. Additionally, standard multi-stall restrooms can be found throughout campus. The all-gender restrooms are marked on the campus map and identifiable in person by signage depicting a triangle inside a circle.

SCC’s Winningest Coach Celebrates Life in Sac Bee Feature
More than a decade ago, SCC Coach Andrew Jones faced a life-altering diagnosis, a brain tumor casting uncertainty over his future. A golf-ball sized mass was removed, and he hoped for 10 more years to witness his son, AJ, grow into adulthood. Jones not only received those 10 years but surpassed them, celebrating a lifetime of achievements. Now, at 57, he coaches his son and the Panthers, who boast an amazing 17-2 record, the program’s best start since 1946.
A devoted mentor, Jones has invested 32 successful years into the Panthers, 24 as the head coach, making him the winningest in Sac City's history. Beyond victories, Jones values family and cherishes each day. Former players turned assistant coaches speak to the family culture he's built, and embody his commitment to molding lives. Despite a tumor scare and surgery, Jones continues to coach with passion and purpose, leaving his mark on Sacramento City College’s legacy while savoring every moment of the good life.

Professor Romero’s new book “Mi Vida Oakland (and other poems)”
English Department Professor Danny Romero's latest book, "Mi Vida Oakland (and other poems), invites readers into a poetic exploration of life and culture. Growing up a California native, Romero uses his life and personal experiences to create verses that resonate with authenticity and insight. As a valued member of SCC’s English Department, we would like to congratulate Professor Danny Romero for continuing to inspire us with his literary contributions.

PTK Beta Eta Psi is excited to announce their first meeting of the semester! Join us on Thursday, February 1 at 1:30 p.m. in Rodda Hall North (RHN258) where we will cover our plans for the year, network, and start the Spring 2024 semester off with a bang! As always, we will have snacks and drinks!
