AANAPISI Week Sept. 27 - Oct. 3

Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Week is September 27 through October 3, acknowledging the many accomplishments of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students and educators from our community. Sacramento City College is an AANAPISI designated institution. Please join us in spreading the word about AANAPISI Week.

Vaccination Deadline is Oct. 1

This Friday, October 1, is the deadline for all Los Rios employees to upload proof of your first COVID-19 vaccine. If you have not yet been vaccinated or uploaded proof of your vaccination status into Employee Self Service, please do so right away. You can find information on how to upload your vaccination status, how to find a local vaccination clinic, and more on the Los Rios vaccine webpage.

Students Can Still Enroll in a Late-Start Class

Late-start classes begin the week of Oct. 14. It’s not too late for students to pick up one more class and make even more progress this semester! The full list of late-start classes is on the class schedule page .

Internship Info Month

All students are invited to join us for a month of districtwide events hosted by the Los Rios Work Experience and Internship Program from each Los Rios campus. Our virtual internship information sessions will be hosted at 12 p.m. and will feature a virtual employer information session or skills workshop.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about available, quality, local internships and the organizations that are offering them. Our kick-off event on Monday, Sept. 27, called Internships 101 will help prepare students for the events happening all month.

Introducing Destination UC Davis!

It is with great enthusiasm that we introduce you to our Equity Transfer Initiative (ETI) project titled "Destination UC Davis." This initiative is in partnership with UC Davis with the goal of increasing the number of African American, Hispanic, and first-generation college students who transfer to UC Davis.

Destination UC Davis will provide students with wraparound services including one-on-one counseling, UC/TAP/TAG application assistance, reference to other equity programs, and connection with a UC Davis representative. The program has a focus on five majors (Biological Science, Communication Studies, Economics, Engineering, and Psychology), but the program will service students from all majors.

While fans are not able to attend indoor sports events this fall for health and safety reasons, that doesn’t mean you will miss out on the action! This fall you can watch the SCC volleyball team on livestream. Find the game on the Athletics website schedule and click the livestream link.

SCC Vocal Recital

The Sacramento City College Music Department presents its Mid-Semester Vocal Recital on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. on Zoom. The recital will feature Advanced Voice and Mentorship students performing a selection of solo works and art songs. The students will be accompanied by our newly hired staff accompanist, Dr. Shinae Kim. This recital is free to the public, and will be accessible online through Zoom.

New Support Group for Black Women Students

"In the Company We Keep" is a nine-week therapeutic support group for Black women students who are currently enrolled at a Los Rios college. It is a safe space where participants can receive support in addressing topics faced by many Black women, as well as discuss their own individual challenges. Group members will learn culturally infused interventions and strategies to help them achieve personal and academic success. Topics that will be discussed include building sisterhood, microaggressions, dating, sex, body image, mental health, and empowerment.

The group meets virtually every Tuesday, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., starting Sept. 28 through Nov. 23. The sessions are free and facilitated by Chioko Grevious. Contact Chioko at chiokogrevious@therosettacenter.com to sign up or get more information.

Faculty Excellence Speaker Series

LRCFT’s Social Justice Caucus presents the Faculty Excellence Speaker Series this fall. Join us on Friday, October 1, from 12:00 to 1:30 pm via Zoom, as panelists Karla Patricia Lanzas Rojas (Assistant Mathematics Professor, SCC) and Nyenbeku C. George (Sociology Professor, CRC) highlight how they incorporate antiracism/equity into their work with students and colleagues. The session will be facilitated by LaQuisha Beckum (Adjunct Psychology Professor, ARC; LRCFT Executive Board Part-Time Representative).

16th Annual Fall Ethics Symposium: Ethics and the City

All are invited to join the conversation on ethics and the city at this year’s fall symposium, which will be held virtually from Wednesday, September 29 through Wednesday, October 13, sponsored by Cosumnes River College and the Sacramento State Center for Practical and Professional Ethics.

Cities are underrated engines of well-being. But in many ways their performance is handicapped by policy affected by ignorance, inertia, racism, and other forms of inequity. Can the creative and cooperative forces driving cities be made to outpace the effects of such policies? What sort of policies effectively rectify the handicapping forces and encourage the creative forces? Speakers will take up these and related questions from different disciplinary and ideological perspectives.

Passing of a Colleague

It is with great sadness that we share that former Philosophy Professor Joseph Simmons has passed away. Simmons taught at SCC for many years. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m., at the Clunie Community Center in McKinley Park in Sacramento.
