All African Diaspora Education Summit

The Los Rios Community College District is sending 30 administrators, faculty and staff to the All African Diaspora Educators Summit in Ghana September 15-26. The goal of the summit is to look at how to bring African-centered education to our classrooms in an effort to implement a narrative that will improve the success of our black students.

The conference will take place at the University of Cape Coast and is expected to bring 350 educators from across the United States, 80% from the community college system, to learn more about African-centered pedagogy.

Cosumnes River College President Ed Bush is the chair of the summit and hopes that this summit will bring long-term collaboration to our students.

Those participating in the summit will be taking supplies to donate to the local high school in Cape Coast. The goal is 1,000 pounds of “lightweight” school supplies.

No donation is too small! Please drop off your donation at Dr. Tanya Anderson's office in South Gym 226 by Friday, September 9.

My name is Andrea Becerra-Lara and I am the Los Rios WEAVE Confidential Advocate for the district. My role is to support students and staff at all four Los Rios campuses who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault/harassment, or sex trafficking. This semester at SCC I will be available for in-person meetings (by appointment only) on Mondays between 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in Rodda Hall North 116. In addition to my support services, I am also available for presentations! My goal during presentations is to engage students in trauma-informed conversations about topics such as domestic violence, sexual assault & consent, healthy vs. unhealthy relationships, and bystander intervention. During these educational presentations, students will also learn about my role and services as the WEAVE Advocate and what resources I can connect them to.

In anticipation for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) in October, this year WEAVE is promoting bystander intervention and community prevention efforts. I would love the opportunity to join your classes in October to provide students with education on what Domestic Violence is, the impact it has on our community, and how to provide support for survivors we may know.
