Caring Campus Updates

The Caring Campus Long-Term Planning Committee (CCLTPC) is continuing our intentional and purposeful work for student success, and we have some exciting information to share!

Mike Harvey has a unique job that literally does not stop—not even for a pandemic! He was on ground when most weren’t and worked tirelessly during the pandemic to re-schedule and receive deliveries in a safe environment. Mike’s deep knowledge of the departments on campus allows him to get deliveries out fast—helping both staff and students. He also receives, inspects, stores, and issues supplies and equipment. You may see him cruise around in a forklift for all those difficult to move items. He’s happy to serve in his capacity and a super person to know! Fantastic job Mike, and congratulations for being a Caring Campus Champion!

Caring Campus Behavioral Commitment 3: Knowing Other Departments

Part of our commitments are getting to know other areas across the college, so join us in learning something new, or getting a refresher on some of our campus services. You can also assist students by providing them the webpages listed below, and referring them to the individual that can assist them (this is also Behavioral Commitment 2: Warm Referral). It’s a two-for-one!

Basic Needs Services: Housed under the Campus Interventions Office, basic needs support comes in a variety of services, not just our weekly food distribution. This area is also referred to as the Basic Needs Center or Basic Needs Resources. Additional services include:

Housing assistance in the form of case management and security deposit assistance grants
Emergency hotel housing (less than 7 days)
Emergency grants up to $500
CalFresh outreach and application assistance
Nutritional Education Series (NES): A program that teaches students how to reduce food expenses, maximize CalFresh benefits, and cook low-cost meals.
Money Matters (beginning Feb. 2022): A program that helps address the financial aspect of basic needs. Students learn how to develop their own budget, including how to save money, develop a “side hustle,” and work with a professional on credit repair.

Operations: Our Custodial Department is SCC’s resource for all cleaning needs. They provide cleaning services for 41 buildings with nearly 1.3 million square feet. They perform a wide variety of activities on campus such as sweeping, scrubbing, vacuuming, cleaning windows, moving and arranging furniture and equipment for college and community events. They lock and unlock doors, receive and pick-up supplies, operate and maintain cleaning equipment, report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards. The Department are our eyes and ears when no one is on campus. They keep our campus clean, safe, and sustainable.

Save the Date: Spring Convocation

You are invited to Spring 2022 Convocation on Friday, January 14, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Zoom. Please join President Michael Gutierrez, Los Rios Chancellor Brian King, and your colleagues for the latest college and district updates. We will share login information and details as we get closer. Also, stay tuned for SCC's Spring 2022 Flex Schedule, which will be available online in early January.

Spring 2022 Enrollment Update

Priority enrollment for Spring 2022 classes is currently underway. Open enrollment begins Tuesday, December 21.

As part of our continued district wide efforts to reduce financial and educational barriers for our neediest students, Los Rios is extending our adjustment to the standard auto-drop process for Spring 2022. Students who enrolled from November 22 to December 21 will be subject to the only Spring 2022 auto-drop for non-payment on the morning of Wednesday, January 5. Students that enrolled on or after December 22 will not be subject to auto-drop.

As a reminder, students with unpaid fees could receive a balance due hold on their student account that prevents them from enrolling in future semesters until their balance due is below the established threshold. View Payment Deadlines.

Refund Request Deadline Approaches

The last day for students to submit a refund request to the Business Services Office for tuition or fees is Thursday, December 16. Visit the refunds webpage for more information. Note: Money in a student’s eServices account is not automatically refunded to them. If they have a credit balance in their eServices account and do not request a refund by the last day of instruction of the semester, then they forfeit that money.

Refunds are issued within six to eight weeks. If students paid by credit card, then a refund will be issued to the credit card they paid with. All other methods of payment will be refunded by check and mailed to the address on file with Admissions and Records.

Student Artists' Vocal Recital — Friday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Artists’ Vocal Recital was created as a forum for student expression, where student artists program a concert with minimal faculty input. This year, students have chosen to use that forum to spread a message of openness and honesty about mental health, and to encourage all of us to reach out for help in these difficult, "half-open/half-closed" times.

Beginning Voice Recital — Monday, Dec. 13, 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Beginning Voice Class presents a recital of solo works and art songs.

Choir presents Suite for the Lost and Found — Tuesday, Dec. 14, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

In collaboration with local composer Derek Sup, the SCC Choir presents the debut of Suite for the Lost and Found, a newly commissioned work for choir, piano, and ANYTHING on hand with some wise words for us all: music is all around us just waiting for us to bring it out!

Intermediate/Advanced Voice Recital — Thursday, December 16, 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Intermediate/Advanced Voice students present a recital of solo works and art songs.

SCC Among 6 Selected Nationally for $50k Grant, Participation in Cohort Model

Sacramento City College is one of six community colleges in the country that has been selected to participate in a multi-year career preparation cohort model that will lead students directly into the workforce. Along with the opportunity to participate in the cohort, SCC will receive a $50,000 grant from New America, in partnership with the Lumina Foundation, to support the work.

The model will include strong, ongoing engagement between SCC and local employers in high-growth, high-demand industries, as well as a re-envisioning and bolstering the work of the college’s existing Career Services to better support students in finding internships and entry into jobs.

Miguel Molina Receives Mexican Government's Ohtli Award

Congratulations to Dr. Miguel Molina, Dean of Connection and Onboarding, who has received the Ohtli Award, the government of Mexico's highest recognition for individuals that have opened pathways to Mexicans abroad, specifically in the United States.

Molina received the award at a ceremony held by the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento.

"This was a huge and pleasant surprise to be honored for my lifetime of work," he says. "It represented to me the legacy of my parents serving others, as well as the years of serving the Latino community of families, students and parents to demystify the going to college pathway and how to pay for it, as well as navigate their degrees towards their career goals.

"It included my work with Dreamers, and collaborations with all segments of higher education and their respective programs and conferences. The honor means the most to me for the disproportionate students who I have served, who were predominantly low income, first generation and who often faced barriers from reaching their dreams through higher education but who have instead met the challenge and gone on to become professionals, mentors, educators and role models for the generations behind them."

Passing of a Colleague

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of former SCC President Jack Fujimoto. He died on Nov. 26 at the age of 93.

Fujimoto, who became president at SCC in 1977, made history as the first Asian American to become the president of a mainland U.S. community college. He served in several other college administrator positions during his career. He also was a writer, who authored the book "Sawtelle: West Los Angeles Japantown," and spent many years traveling the country with his wife after he retired.
