Honoring Native American Heritage
In November, we observe National American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month—a time to honor the rich cultures, languages, histories, and enduring resilience of Native American Nations. We recognize the sovereignty and invaluable land stewardship practices of Tribal Nations and reflect on Sacramento’s history, which includes the dispossession, challenges, and resilience of present-day Tribal citizens not only in this region but also across the United States.
SCC takes this moment to share the official campus Land Acknowledgement Statement, which has been carefully crafted in consultation with local Tribes to pay respect to the Tribal Nations. The campus encourages everyone to reflect on this statement and recognize the history, resilience, and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples.

Sacramento City College Land Acknowledge Statement
We acknowledge the land currently occupied by Sacramento City College as the traditional home of the Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan people. These sovereign people have been caretakers of the area since time immemorial. Despite centuries of genocide and occupation, the Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan people continue as vibrant and resilient federally recognized and unrecognized tribes, bands, and rancherias. Today, we honor and recognize our Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan tribal neighbors for their contributions as the caretakers of the Sacramento Valley and honor their sustained existence. It is with their blessing and continued guidance that Sacramento City College seeks to provide an accessible, equitable, and supportive institution of learning and experience.

Panther Cares Ribbon Cutting
On Tuesday, October 29 SCC hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of our new Panther Cares Basic Needs Center. SCC created the Panther Cares Program to provide one central location for students in need in order to help students stay on the path to success!

CCC to HBCU College Fair is back at SCC!
Explore the incredible opportunities at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by joining us for the HBCU College Fair on Thursday, November 7, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at SCC in the City Café!
Attendees will learn about academic programs, scholarships, student life at an HBCU, and get help with your college applications on-site. You'll also hear from current students and alumni about what it’s like to attend an HBCU.

Tuesday, November 5, is Election Day—a time to make your voice heard! Sacramento City College is making it easier for you with a convenient mail-in ballot drop box located on campus.

Chancellor Office Hours
Los Rios Chancellor Brian King will host monthly office hours at each Los Rios college. This is an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to talk to Chancellor King about any topic important to them or their college in general.
Chancellor King's October Office Hour at SCC will be on Wednesday, November 6, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm in Rodda Hall - South 270 (RHS270).

Los Rios Artificial Intelligence Summit
Join members of the Los Rios community for a collaborative gathering of faculty, student services professionals, and student leaders where we can learn from each other, come to better understand, and articulate our needs relating to artificial intelligence, and lay the groundwork for a path forward. The Los Rios AI³ Summit: “Artificial Intelligence. Academic Integrity. Authentic Inquiry.” will be held on Friday, November 15, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at Folsom Lake College’s main campus (view map and directions). Event check-in will begin in the Falcon’s Roost. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served. Please note that registration is limited to the first 175 participants or until Friday, November 8, whichever comes first. We encourage you to register early to secure your spot!
Presenters include Dr. Candace Thille of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University; UC Regent Lark Park, Director of the California Education Learning Lab; Janiela Bolds, Managing Director at Accenture; representatives from the Academic Senate of California Community Colleges, local industry leaders, and members of our own amazing faculty and staff. Hosted by the District Academic Senate and the FLC Artificial Intelligence department.

Universal Design: Canvas Pages and Assignments
Join us for an insightful session on Friday, November 8, from 12:00 to 1:00 pm and explore how using Canvas Pages can streamline course navigation, making it easier for students to complete assignments. By implementing a few key changes, instructors can enhance students' understanding of assignments.
Participants will learn how to use a simple framework for structuring assignments, allowing faculty to create or revise course tasks that enhance student learning while maintaining academic rigor. We will cover three easy steps to improve students' comprehension and engagement with course assignments. Flex credit is available for this event.

Upcoming Y Drive Decommissioning for Students
As of December 31, 2024, SCC will be decommissioning the Y Drive, a local storage option previously available for students. Students are encouraged to transfer any remaining files from the Y Drive to their Google Drive by the end of the fall semester to maintain easy, flexible access off-campus.
The Student Tech Support Desk is available to assist students with the transition if needed.

Passing of a Colleague
It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Inoke Qarau, a dedicated Student Support Specialist at SCC. Inoke left us on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at just 29 years old.
Prior to his appointment with the API Center, Inoke served as Temp SPA for the RISE Program specializing in Pacific Islander Programming and Student Support. During his time with RISE, Inoke served as co-advisor for the Pasifika Connection Club and spearheaded initiatives such as Warriors on the RISE Conference, Study-Ball, and other student-centered retention events. Inoke was also instrumental in helping to establish The VAKA Pasifika Learning Community.
