May is Mental Health Awareness Month
Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, a national movement fights stigma, provides support, educates the public and advocates for policies that support people with mental illness and their families. Mental Health Month raises awareness of trauma and the impact it can have on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of children, families, and communities. Mental Health support and therapy are available to LRCCD students at no cost through Timely MD. Telehealth services can be utilized for free in the moment support and/or for free scheduled short-term therapy.
Los Rios’ Employee Assistance Program provides free resources to help employees lead healthier and happier lives, including confidential counseling and wellness coaching. For students, SCC Telehealth is available 24/7/365 to help address their medical and mental health needs. Whether they have the flu, need to talk through test anxiety, or want to schedule a time to speak with a counselor, licensed providers are available to help!

All are invited to a virtual Los Rios Summit for the Future on Thursday, May 6 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., featuring Los Rios Chancellor Brian King, ARC President Melanie Dixon, CRC President Ed Bush, FLC President Whitney Yamamura, and SCC President Michael Gutierrez.
At the summit, the five leaders will explore a variety of important topics surrounding our post-pandemic landscape, putting our shared commitment to equity and social justice into action, and the role of organizational structure in that work.
There are lots of questions about changes underway in our organization, many of which we don’t yet have answers to. We expect and hope this summit will set the stage for more dialogue on the important issues facing our institutions. There will be ample opportunities to submit questions and comments in the weeks and months ahead.

'Caring Campus' as Crosswalk to City Ways
The Caring Campus Long-Term Planning Committee (CCLTPC) began in January 2021. Our focus is to develop implementation, monitoring, and communication plans, to ensure the work we started last summer continues, to hold all constituencies accountable, and to present and share behavioral commitments and efforts with our college community.
One of our goals this semester included the creation of a Chart of Services, to better inform our students of the resources and services that are available to them throughout our College and centers, and a Campus Contact List that provides detailed information about who to contact when employees have questions. Please be sure to read the “Information” tab in each document before using. The “Information” tab in each will help guide the use of both resources.
A reminder about who we are: During the summer of 2020, the Vice President of Administration Carrie Bray and more than 25 classified professionals from SCC’s main campus, and our Davis and West Sacramento Centers, worked on the Caring Campus initiative to develop action-based behavioral commitments to improve student experience and engagement. This work reinforces and supports the college’s City Ways efforts.
The CCLTPC is a group of classified professionals who are champions when it comes to serving our students, and who already exhibit behaviors that mirror the Caring Campus behavioral commitments.
-
Caring Communication – Introduce yourself
-
Warm Referrals – Take the person to their next step or call ahead
-
Know Other Departments – Know our college, so we can help students
-
Reach Out to Students – Follow up on interactions
We want you to think of Caring Campus as a crosswalk to City Ways. What does that mean exactly? It’s simple: City Ways is what we aspire to do, and Caring Campus is how we actualize those goals.
Look out for regular updates in this newsletter beginning Fall 2021.
The CCLTPC would like to challenge everyone on campus to implement the following perspective in their everyday interactions: Think students, then decide.
