Lunar New Year is Feb. 12

Lunar New Year is celebrated on Feb. 12 this year. This is a holiday observed by many Asian cultures as a way to celebrate the beginning of a new year, based on the Lunar calendar as opposed to the Gregorian calendar. Although each culture celebrates a little differently, each year is assigned to a different animal from the Chinese Zodiac — 2021 is the Year of the Ox!

Open Educational Resources Nominations for Recognition

The Affordable Educational Resources Committee wants to recognize any employee or group at SCC that has contributed to OER adoption, promotion, or any other interesting projects related to OERs. Please nominate yourself or others. The brief shoutout will go out during Celebrate City in March.

COVID-19 Vaccine Info Session

Will you choose to be vaccinated when the vaccine is available to you? Los Rios Health and Wellness staff, including consulting physician Dr. Joseph Iser, will present up-to-date information on the new COVID vaccines and address some of the most frequently asked questions at an information session on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. on Zoom. This session will be recorded if you can't join us in real time.

Presentation on Photographing 562 Native Tribes

Photographer Matika Wilber will present "Project 562: Changing the Way We See Native America" on Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. to the Los Rios community via Z oom. Project 562 is a multi-year national photography project dedicated to photographing over 562 federally recognized tribes in the United States in an effort to create an unprecedented repository of imagery and oral histories that accurately portrays contemporary Native Americans. This special event is held in conjunction with the ARC Photography Area, ARC Native American Resource Center, and Viewpoint Photographic Art Center Student Program and is made possible by an Innovation Grant from the ARC Philanthropy Office. Correction: Celebration of Excellence Nominations Due March 15

Please note, the nomination deadline was listed incorrectly in last week's newsletter. Nominations are due Friday, March 15, 2021 by 5 p.m. We apologize for the error.

The Celebration of Excellence is an annual event recognizing special people who have played an important role in building the success of Sacramento City College. Once again, the Honors and Awards Committee is recognizing employees for the Individual Excellence Award and the Team Excellence Award for exemplary performance and achievement.

The Individual Excellence Award is open for nominations of any administrative, certificated, or classified professional, full time, part time, or temporary, who has demonstrated excellence in their daily activities and contributed to the enhancement and prestige of the college. For the Team Excellence Award, a team is defined as a group of interdependent people who work collaboratively and closely together toward a common goal. Team members may not nominate their own team.

In order to submit a nomination, please:

Complete an Individual Excellence Award nomination form or Team Excellence Award nomination form (you will need to sign in to your Los Rios Google Apps account via your Wxxxxxxx@apps.losrios.edu email address to complete either form); and
Create a 2-3 minute video nomination (1 GB limit), which you will upload to the nomination form. Please explain — with examples — why this nominee/team should be considered for the Excellence Award using the following eight criteria:

Exhibits expertise in job area
Performs job in an exemplary manner
Works for the betterment of the college and its students
Demonstrates qualities of leadership and/or initiative
Represents the college with distinction in professional and community activities
Earns the respect of fellow employees and/or students involved in campus events
Volunteers time and energy above and beyond assignment
Promotes the values of anti-racism and equity-mindedness

You may be as creative as you like in the video nomination. The video nomination may include PowerPoint slides, live footage of the nominee/team in action, narration, recording of a Zoom meeting, etc. This video will be shown at Fall Convocation to introduce the awardee. The Honors and Awards Committee asks you to provide sufficient information so we can evaluate all submissions as fairly as possible.

SCC Library Now Offering Curbside Pickup During Closure

Curbside pickup is now available for the borrowing of books and other materials through the SCC Library!

Although the library building remains closed, students may borrow most materials, such as books and DVDs. The process is more restricted than in normal times, but we're working hard to make items available. Students can find items to borrow using OneSearch on the library's website.

Materials may be returned using the Book Return boxes located behind or in front of the SCC Library.

Wellness Writing Workshop Feb. 10

Join us for "Write Your Way to Wellness" on Wednesday, Feb. 10, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom (passcode: 959442).Learn about the therapeutic power of wellness writing and journaling, which can help you decompress when life's many demands start to overwhelm. Hosted by FLC’s Tom Goff with the Reading & Writing Center and Mary Hansen with Health & Wellness Services.

February is American Heart Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but heart disease is preventable and controllable. Heart disease affects all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and excessive alcohol use.

Do you know how to keep your heart healthy? You can take an active role in reducing your risk for heart disease by eating a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, and managing your cholesterol and blood pressure. This is a great chance to start some heart-healthy habits!

President Gutierrez's Office Hour

President Gutierrez will be holding an office hour twice a month during the Fall semester. Office hours will be held on the second Friday at 8:30 a.m. and fourth Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The next upcoming office hour will be Thursday, February 25, 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please look for an email prior to each event to sign up. Zoom info will be sent via a calendar invite on the day before the event to those who signed up.
