November is National Native American Heritage Month. It is a time to honor the sovereignty, traditions, languages, resilience, and land stewardship practices of American Indian tribal nations. It is also an opportunity to recognize SCC's ongoing relationship with local tribal nations and to consider how Sacramento history is the story of land dispossession, genocide, and harmful policies. It is a time to acknowledge the realities and lived experiences of present-day tribal citizens not only in this region but also across the United States.

Sacramento City College Land Acnkowledgment Statement

We acknowledge the land currently occupied by Sacramento City College as the traditional home of the Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan people. These sovereign people have been caretakers of the area since time immemorial. Despite centuries of genocide and occupation, the Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan people continue as vibrant and resilient federally recognized and unrecognized tribes, bands, and rancherias. Today, we honor and recognize our Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan tribal neighbors for their contributions as the caretakers of the Sacramento Valley and honor their sustained existence. It is with their blessing and continued guidance that Sacramento City College seeks to provide an accessible, equitable, and supportive institution of learning and experience.

This month and throughout the year, we are committed to honoring tribal sovereignty and to continuing our work to establish and maintain legal and ethical relationships with local tribal nations. We also voice support for our American Indian/Alaskan Native students and employees.

Info Session: Students Serving on Hiring and Standing Committees

All SCC students are invited to an information session about participating on college hiring and standing committees! Join us – and please also encourage students to come – November 2, noon to 1:00 pm, in RHS 174, to learn more!


SCC is committed to putting students first, and we need students on our hiring committees to represent the student voice in hiring decisions. Additionally, students may serve on any of several standing committees that are crucial in the decision-making process for the college. Light refreshments will be served.

SCC Unveils Two New Science Buildings!

On Tuesday, October 24 SCC President Albert Garcia welcomed staff, alumni and donors to the official unveiling of two new science buildings on our campus. Mohr Hall and the Natural Sciences building sit on the southern side of the campus, anchoring our college at a major intersection across from William Land Park. These state of the art facilities offer our students a robust, hands-on, educational experience that aims to create the new generation of engineers, scientists, and healthcare professionals.

SCC Library to be Renamed in Honor of Joan Didion

SCC will be renaming the college’s library in honor of renowned author Joan Didion. The building will now be known as the Joan Didion Learning Resource Center, in recognition of a generous $500,000 gift from Didion family and the Sacramento Historical Society (SHS). Joan Didion was an American writer and journalist and is considered one of the pioneers of New Journalism. Born in Sacramento in 1934, Didion attended Sacramento City College in the 1950s. This generous gift from her family and SHS will support writing scholarships for students as well as faculty research programs that align with the late author’s interests.

CCCCO DSPS Program Survey 

As part of our program review process, the Sacramento City College Disability Services and Programs for Students (DSPS) program is inviting you to complete this three to five minute survey about your experiences serving students with disabilities. The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) requires us to conduct this survey (questions 1 - 14) as part of the DSPS Program Plan. Questions 15 - 16 are designed by SCC's DSPS program. Your response will help us better improve our services.

RIDA Workshop: Faculty Data Examination for Equity 

Join us Wednesday, November 1, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 pm for an informative RIDA workshop! The PRIE data team and SCC’s faculty equity coordinator will guide faculty members through an in-depth look of their classroom data. I'm a Chemist! Special Picture Book for Children!

SCC Chemistry professor Marisa Alviar-Agnew and her husband Paul Agnew, have completed their best experiment yet, an enchanting chemistry picture book made for children! What started as a loving gift to their own children two decades ago grew into an adorable, fully published book with the help of gifted illustrator Dominic Rodriguez. Their heartfelt hope is that parents and teachers will use this book with their children to explore the love of Science, especially Chemistry, which is all around us. Buy or order it at a local bookstore or on Amazon.

Sacramento City College is hosting the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Caravan Tour on Monday, October 30 from 10:00  a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the SCC Quad!
