Panther POV: For First Years at SCC!
A friendly reminder to any first-year students. Come by and participate in Panther POV on Thursday, October 12, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the Quad (rain plan: Student Center).
Panther POV is an opportunity for prospective students and their families to learn about SCC's academic programs and get connected with resources on campus. There will be lots of information available and program representatives will be onsite to answer questions. If you know someone who may be interested in enrolling at SCC, encourage them to come see the Panther POV!

Monthly Grants Clinic
Don't miss the monthly Grants Clinic on the second Thursday of each month, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., with Sue Byrne, Director of Grants Management.
Upcoming clinics are scheduled for Oct. 12, Nov. 9 and Dec. 14. This is an opportunity to get help with finding grants, completing an application or getting clarity on where to start.
Make an appointment to meet Sue or simply pop in at RHN-277 (Public Information Office) to discuss all things grant-related!

SCC Professor featured in New York Times Article
Dr. Ruth Sime, SCC Chemistry professor, was recently interviewed in a major article published by the New York Times. The article written by Katrina Miller highlights the scientific contributions of Lise Meiter, a Jewish woman and physicist who worked side-by-side with Otto Hahn to develop the theory of nuclear fission. Their work would lead to the Manhattan Project, the creation of the Atomic Bomb, and the Nobel Prize; except Meiter would never receive her awards. Sime emphasized the theme of the article by translating a letter from Meitner to Hahn further demonstrating how important Meiter was to the scientific breakthrough of their lifetimes.

Celebrating Our Tribal Nations
Indigenous Peoples Day, which falls on Monday, October 9 this year, recognizes and celebrates the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of the Native people who are the first inhabitants of the Americas, including the land that became the United States.

We acknowledge the land currently occupied by Sacramento City College as the traditional home of the Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan people. These sovereign people have been caretakers of the area since time immemorial. Despite centuries of genocide and occupation, the Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan people continue as vibrant and resilient federally recognized and unrecognized tribes, bands, and rancherias. Today, we honor and recognize our Maidu, Miwok and Nisenan tribal neighbors for their contributions as the caretakers of the Sacramento Valley and honor their sustained existence. It is with their blessing and continued guidance that Sacramento City College seeks to provide an accessible, equitable, and supportive institution of learning and experience. | |
National Coming Out Day
National Coming Out Day will be celebrated globally on Wednesday, October 11. Founded on the idea that increased visibility leads to decreased bias, this day encourages members of the LGBTQ+ community to come out and live their true identity. We want to acknowledge that there are many reasons that people may not be “out.” Society is not always a safe and welcoming place. Coming out is brave and freeing, but can be difficult.
On October 11, we recognize all those who live their lives openly, proudly, and without shame. We celebrate the LGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff, and administrators who make our college a more inclusive and equitable place.

Soroptimist "Live Your Dream" Scholarship
The local Soroptimist International chapters are seeking grant applications from women who serve as the primary earners for their families and are in need of financial assistance to continue their education or training. Live Your Dream Award finalists will be awarded up to $16,000 to help offset tuition costs, purchase books, get transportation, or find reliable childcare so they can worry less about how to pay their bills and focus on reaching their dreams. Applications are due by Wednesday, November 15.

Students to Vote in Special Election This Week – October 10-11
Los Rios is holding a Student Special Election on Measure A: Extending the Los Rios-RT Universal Transit Pass Program this Tuesday, October 10, and Wednesday, October 11 via eServices. Measure A is a proposed extension of the existing Universal Transit Pass (UTP) program. The UTP program gives eligible students access to a semester-long Regional Transit (RT) pass. If approved, this measure would extend the UTP program through December 31, 2028. Students currently paying the UTP would not see any increase in their per-unit fees.
