Return to In-Person Classes & Services February 22
Effective Tuesday, February 22, we will resume in-person instruction for all classes that were originally scheduled in-person and resume in-person services where appropriate. The transition to more in-person instruction and services will require us to continue to be nimble in the face of evolving public health conditions. Omicron likely will not be the last COVID-19 variant that comes to our community. We will continue to respond in real time to the rapidly evolving public health dynamics in our communities.

Maintaining Mask Requirement
Last week, Governor Newsom announced that, starting February 16, the statewide mask mandate would be lifted for vaccinated people in most indoor spaces (for now, the mandate remains in place for unvaccinated people and in K-12 schools). We are following all of the evolving guidance on this issue closely. For now, we will maintain the districtwide mask requirement already in place in the interest of clarity and given the many different applicable standards. We recognize that clarity is critical with such a complicated issue, which is why we believe that maintaining this universal approach is prudent for now. We will reassess our mask requirement in the weeks ahead based on further evolving guidance and public health information.

The spring 2022 Administrative Justice program is hosting a series of informational sessions with local employers, transfer institutions and special guests!

Expungement Clinic on Saturdays
Los Rios students with a Sacramento County criminal conviction can explore setting the conviction aside through the free American River College Expungement Clinic.

Clearing convictions will help when students are trying to get a job, professional license, or good career.
  • ARC Paralegal students will help you, under the supervision of Clinic attorneys;
  • Documents are completed to legal standards and courtroom ready;
  • Background criminal history is obtained free with your permission;
  • Schedule an interview where you learn your options;
  • The process takes 60 to 90 days from interview to court hearing.

Students can schedule an appointment by emailing cleanrecord@arc.losrios.edu. Interviews are available through Zoom on Saturday mornings from February 19 through May 7. Clinic service is limited to Los Rios students with convictions in Sacramento County.
SCC Nursing Program Receives $500,000 Grant
Sacramento City College’s Nursing program has been awarded a $500,000 New & Innovative Grant by the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office for an LVN to RN pre-apprenticeship program. The funding will support LVN's who are taking prerequisites for the RN program and who are currently working at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). The grant provides this underserved group release time so the students can attend class as well as funding for tuition and books. This program will increase the number of RNs at CDCR and provide a career pathway for the students.
FLC Ceramics Exhibit Now on Display
Folsom Lake College (FLC) presents the “This is the Anthropocene” art exhibit now on display through Sunday, March 27 pm at the Harris Center for the Arts in the Bank of America Gallery. The exhibit features works by Cynthia Siegel, Shannon Sullivan, Jenni Ward, Susan Whitmore, and Wesley Wright in response to the “Anthropocene” or current geological age of which human activity has a dominant influence on the climate and the environment. There will be a reception on Thursday, March 17, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.

The Bank of America Gallery is open for regular viewing an hour before Harris Center scheduled performances through intermission, by appointment through FLC Art Professor Marisa Sayago (sayagom@flc.losrios.edu), as well as for extended hours the week of March 15-19 as part of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) 2022 Multicultural Fellowship Exhibition event in Sacramento:

CRC Art Gallery | Real ID
Eight ceramic artists take on identity in the CRC Art Gallery exhibit "Real ID." "Real-ID" questions where our concept of identity originates. This exhibit is part of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) project, "Fertile Ground." 

This exhibit runs from February 25 to March 29, 2022. The opening reception will take place February 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Gallery regular hours: Monday to Friday, 12:00 to 4:00 pm. More information about the exhibit and map to the art gallery can be found on the CRC event website.
Forever a Panther
The Faculty Association of California Community Colleges (FACCC) will posthumously honor SCC Professor Paul Baltimore with the 2022 Jonathan Lightman FACCCtivist award at a special event on Sunday, March 6 in Sacramento as part of FACCC’s annual Advocacy & Policy Conference. Paul taught at three of the Los Rios colleges (CRC, FLC and SCC) and was a passionate advocate for his fellow adjunct faculty. The Los Rios delegation of faculty will be on hand to accept the award on behalf of Paul’s family.
Passing of a Colleague: Dan Garcia
Daniel Peter Garcia, who had a 57-year career as an English and humanities teacher and professor, died Jan. 15 in Lincoln, California. He was 90.
Though he was fully vaccinated, he died from complications of COVID-19, according to his wife, Jean Walker Garcia.
 
Dan was best known as a professor of English and humanities at Sacramento City College where he taught full time from 1964–2001, then as an adjunct professor through 2012.
He began his teaching career at El Camino High School (1956–1959), then became an English professor at Eastern Illinois University, Parson’s College, and Humboldt State University (1960 – 1963).
 
Garcia was born July 19, 1931 in New York City. He earned a B.A. in English and Education from Blackburn College, Carlinville, Illinois (1953) and an M.A. in English and Education from New York State Teacher’s College (1954). He served in the U.S. Army beginning in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1956.
 
He earned a Ph.D. in English and Literary Criticism from the University of Oregon, Eugene (1962) and graduated from McGeorge School of Law. He became a member of the State Bar of California in 1992.
 
He married Tersilla Varesio in 1958, and the couple had three daughters—Ann, Joan, and Gail. After Tersilla Garcia died in 2011, he married Jean Walker, who survives him. They enjoyed dancing, traveling with Sports Leisure, going to the Opera in San Francisco, and socializing with their many friends. 
 
Garcia is also survived by his daughters, as well as sons-in-law Bill Rapp, Larry McGlone, and Rick Gurkin; a stepdaughter, Debbie Marino; seven grandchildren; sister-in-law Alma Varesio Herrera, and a niece and nephew.
President Gutierrez's Office Hour
SCC President Michael Gutierrez will hold scheduled office hours on the last Thursday of the month during the Spring semester, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Upcoming office hours dates are as follows:
