We Celebrate Black History 
Black History Month continues with a variety of events and activities planned by college name and all of the Los Rios colleges. Visit the Black History Month at SCC webpage for the latest information.
Districtwide Marketing Efforts to Increase Enrollment
Our college and districtwide marketing team is constantly updating and evolving our marketing efforts in response to our growing focus on access at our colleges amid these unprecedented times. We remain focused on growing enrollment at our colleges and creating a public “face” for our institutions that reflects our focus on student success and our organizational commitment to equity and inclusion.

Direct mail, digital advertising, billboards, radio (both digital and terrestrial), calling campaigns, community-based events - you name it, we are trying it. Visit our new marketing web page for more information on our current marketing campaigns and examples of the strategies being used.
The Caring Campus Long-Term Planning Committee (CCLTPC) is continuing our intentional and purposeful work for student success, and we have some exciting information to share!

New Updates:
Webpage Wednesday, held on January 12, 2022, was a huge success! At our first college-wide Webpage Wednesday event we accomplished:
  • Bringing together more than 110 classified professionals, administrators, supervisors, and deans
  • Reviewing and updating student and employee facing webpages for accuracy and relevancy
  • Facilitating a training and submitting the marketing webpage form online in real time
  • Actuating Behavioral Commitment 2: Warm Referrals (getting students to the correct location virtually)
  • Actuating Behavioral Commitment 3: Know Other Departments (and our own)

Thank you to all who participated, and to the Public Information Office and Webmaster for co-hosting our event. We look forward to seeing you all again on July 13, 2022 for our second Webpage Wednesday installment.
Caring Campus Champion:
Champion: Karla López-Chaveste (she/her/hers) Cultural Engagement Centers (CEC) Student Personnel Assistant

Behavioral Commitment: Warm Referrals and Know Other Departments 
 
Karla serves as the CEC Student Personnel Assistant and Team Lead. Since securing the CEC role, Karla has led program development and support for the Asian Pacific Islander (API) Program, Native American Student Program, as well as the Pride Center. Karla has also built capacity to increase student engagement online, in-person, and virtual passive programming opportunities to keep students engaged with culturally-affirming topics and wellness tips during hybrid and remote learning. A sampling of programing hosted by Karla: API Winter Bash, Los Rios Big Queer Welcome, and the Two-part Intersectional LGBTQ+ Series: TherActivist – They/Them/Theirs – Pride Center with co-sponsor ASHE Center/Umoja-SBA.
 
Tapping into her time as a former Puentista student and Temp Specialist with RISE, Karla experience includes strong relationships with, and knowledge of, various departments. Through the use of warm referrals, Karla continues to demonstrate and model allyship in action in serving multiple disproportionately impacted communities through her commitment to engaging and supporting minoritized student populations. Fantastic job Karla, and congratulations for being a Caring Campus Champion!

Caring Campus Behavioral Commitment 3: Knowing Other Departments
Part of our commitments are getting to know other areas across the college, so join us in learning something new, or getting a refresher on some of our campus services. You can also assist students by providing them the webpages listed below, and referring them to the individual that can assist them (this is also Behavioral Commitment 2: Warm Referral). It’s a two-for-one!

Cultural Engagement Centers: Hello and greetings SCC Family! I’m Lisa Hayden the specialist in the ASHE Center. My colleague, Alejandra Benites is the specialist in the RASA Center. We are excited to share an upcoming student workshop brought together as a joint effort.

As many of you know the Los Rios Colleges Foundation provides scholarships during the spring to students that apply. The deadline to apply is March 4, 2022! Please encourage students to attend our upcoming workshop held on 02/10 as we will be sharing how to write a personal statement and how to ask for a letter of recommendation!

In closing, I wish you all well! I know that during the pandemic mental wellness has been brought to the forefront as one of the services our students are in desperate need of, and I wanted to share an additional resource provided by Dean Dr. Tanya Anderson and Supervisor Valerie Chueh:

Therapy for Students
Students can choose a preferred therapist by filling out the Therapy for SCC Students Form. Therapy is available for SCC students now through the end of April 2022. This additional resource serves to equitize mental wellness! Students will now have even more options when choosing a therapist and even therapists that look like them! Please post in your canvas shells.

Handshake for Student, Alumni Career Opportunities
Please encourage students to join Handshake, the one-stop-shop for Los Rios students and alumni to explore a myriad of careers, connect with local employers, build their network, get hired, register for events, find volunteer opportunities and internships, and much more!

A perk for our alumni folks is that if they complete a certificate or degree, they get to stay on the platform for an additional two semesters. Great benefits and services are readily accessible at their fingertips!

This online career and internship platform is geared to our students and employers are vetted so folks can be sure they are getting quality job offers. Whether someone is a current student or an alumnus, they should explore the Handshake platform and see how it can radically change their educational and job search experience.
Passing of a Colleague: Dan Garcia
We are very sad to share the passing of former Humanities faculty Daniel Garcia. Dan taught in the Humanities Department both as a tenured professor and later as an adjunct, for almost 40 years. During his tenure with SCC, Dan impacted thousands in our community through his love of teaching and passion for humanities. Our thoughts are with Dan’s family and friends, and those students and colleagues whose lives he touched. 
President Gutierrez's Office Hour
SCC President Michael Gutierrez will hold scheduled office hours on the last Thursday of the month during the Spring semester, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Upcoming office hours dates are as follows:
