Honoring & Supporting Our Veterans
All Los Rios student veterans are invited to a listening session on Monday, November 8, from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom. This event will provide a supportive place for our veterans, in light of recent events surrounding the U.S. withdrawal out of Afghanistan and issues related to the pandemic. Hosted by the ARC Veterans Resource Center in collaboration with Los Rios’ Center for Mental Health and Wellness. Additional resources are available to veterans – contact the Veterans Center for more information.
Then join FLC's Equity Center to honor and celebrate the contributions and creativity of veterans in our community on Wednesday, November 10, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 pm via Zoom. Presenters include veteran Reneé Marie and Maria Maldonado of Peace Poles for Schools, as well as student veteran Will Hong.
Sacramento City College will also be closed on Thursday, Nov. 11th, in observance of Veterans Day. No classes will be held and all college offices will be closed. Thank you to all of our student veterans and our faculty and staff who are former military for your service!

In November, we celebrate Native American Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month and the history, culture, accomplishments, and contributions of the people who were the first inhabitants of the United States. Explore the dances, family traditions, and music of American Indians and Alaska Natives with a special collection of films, short stories, and resources on the PBS website.

Sac City Exchange: Mission, Vision, and Values
Join us on Zoom tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 9, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., for a Sac City Exchange.
During this session, we will review, discuss and hear your feedback on the draft updated Mission, Vision, and Values for the college. We will also discuss the proposed LRCCD strategic planning process, we there will be an opportunity to give feedback on that as well. See you there!

Open Educational Resources Nominations for Recognition
The Affordable Educational Resources Committee wants to recognize any employee or group at SCC that has contributed to expanding access to free textbook materials for students. This includes OER adoption, promotion, or any other interesting projects related to OER. Please nominate yourself or others. The brief shout-out will go out during Celebrate City in December.

Flexible Spending Account Open Enrollment is Here!
Now is the time for regular permanent employees to enroll in a Medical, Limited Use, and/or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for the 2022 calendar year. You can use the FSA plan to pay for your out-of-pocket healthcare or daycare expenses with PRETAX EARNINGS. Simply designate a specific amount of your pay (before taxes are withheld) to go into your FSA to use for expenses you will have in the coming year.
If you enroll during open enrollment, your accounts will be effective on January 1, 2022. You must enroll during open enrollment in order to participate in the plans in 2022. Your FSA elections DO NOT roll over from year to year.
You have until Friday, November 19 to log into the benefits supersite and make your FSA selections. If you do not enroll during the current open enrollment period, your next opportunity to do so would be during open enrollment next fall, with the exception of a mid-year qualifying life event. We strongly recommend enrolling early in the enrollment period so you are able to obtain assistance, if needed.

Understanding Afghanistan Beyond Soundbites
All are invited to "Understanding Afghanistan Beyond Soundbites," a teach-in with special guest speaker Dr. Hakeem Naim on Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
Dr. Naim is an SCC alumnus who currently teaches history at Northern Arizona State University. He grew up in Afghanistan and has lived in multiple countries as a refugee/immigrant. He received his Ph.D. in Modern Middle East history from the University of California at Davis in 2019. In his research, Dr. Naim focuses on late 19th century Islamic nationalism, colonialism, post-colonial theories, and comparative intellectual history of the Ottoman Empire, Afghanistan, and Central Asia.
Dr. Naim will help us understand the nature and impacts of 20 years of US military occupation of Afghanistan and the recent withdrawal of US troops. This event is sponsored by SCC’s Global Studies program.

Movies for Mental Health
You are invited to “Movies for Mental Health” on Wednesday, November 17, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. via Zoom. This interactive, online experience will feature an anonymous, chat-based discussion on mental health, the stigma that frequently surrounds mental illness, and media portrayals of mental health issues. Following this will be a live screening of three award-winning short films, therapeutic activities to consciously connect minds and bodies, and a collective exploration around what the work means for us as individuals. The event will culminate in a panel of lived-experience speakers and mental health resources, empowering us to share our own stories and access support available to us in these uncertain times. Hosted by SCC Health & Wellness Services.

Join us for a "Write Your Way to Wellness" workshop on Wednesday, November 10 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Learn about the therapeutic power of wellness writing and journaling, which can help you decompress when life's many demands start to overwhelm you. Hosted by FLC’s Tom Goff with the Reading & Writing Center and Mary Hansen with Health & Wellness Services.

Intersectional Series
The SCC Pride Center & ASHÉ Center present a two-part intersectional series. The events are LGBTQ+ 101 training on Tuesday, November 9, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., led by Valerie Chueh (they/she) and co-facilitated by Zulema Padilla (she/her). Students can win $10 Chipotle gift card.
The next event is TherActivist: They/Them/Theirs, a short film and discussion on Thursday November 18, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., led by TherActivist and Dr. Khalid White. Students can win $20 Amazon gift card.

Great American Smokeout
Are you a smoker and would like to quit? November 18 is the date for this year's Great American Smokeout. Quitting smoking isn’t easy. It takes time and a plan. Let the Great American Smokeout event be the day to start your journey toward a smoke-free life. The Los Rios Community College District is tobacco-free, smoke-free, and vape-free. The American Cancer Society can help you access the resources and support you need to quit.
