Big Changes Coming: Common Course Numbering Starts Fall 2025 Starting Fall 2025, all California Community Colleges will be transitioning to a new Common Course Numbering (CCN) system. This change is part of a statewide initiative (AB 1111) to make it easier for students to transfer between California community colleges and four-year universities.

So, what does this mean for you?

The CCN system is designed to make course numbers consistent across all California Community Colleges. That means if you take a course like English Composition at one college, it'll have the same course number and title at another. No more guesswork when transferring or figuring out what courses count toward your degree!

Hereโ€™s what the new format will look like:

  • Subject Code: A four-letter abbreviation (e.g., ENGL = English)
  • Course Type Identifier:
  • -โ€œCโ€ means itโ€™s part of the Common Course Numbering system
  • -Courses not part of CCN wonโ€™t have the โ€œCโ€
  • Course Number: A standardized 4-digit number

Example:

ENGL C1000 โ†’ This tells you it's a Common Course Number for English Composition.

This fall, some courses will transition to CCN. For example, ENGWR 300 is included in the first transition phase, so you will look for ENGL C1000 when you register for Fall 2025 classes. Click on the button below for more information. If you have additional questions, reach out to your counselorโ€”theyโ€™re here to help!
