Digital Inclusion Week
Digital Inclusion Week (DIW) is an annual campaign that recognizes local digital inclusion organizations and special events that promote digital equity across the country. Please join the campaign October 4-8 – this will be our biggest Digital Inclusion Week ever, with seasoned practitioners and newly launched programs hosting virtual and in-person events. DIW aims to raise awareness of solutions addressing home internet access, personal devices, and local technology training and support programs.
Multi-Factor Authentication Information Session
The Los Rios Information Technology team is hosting an information session on Thursday, October 7, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm to provide Los Rios employees with the following:
  • An overview of the Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) roll-out
  • Demonstration of the user experience
  • Guided walk-through of the setup process
  • Time to answer any questions users may have about the MFA process

As a reminder, MFA will be required for all Los Rios employees (faculty, adjunct faculty, classified staff, temporary, contractors, and student employees) to increase the security of Los Rios systems and combat cybercriminals. The scheduled effective date for all classified employees (non-faculty) is October 12, 2021. The effective date for all faculty is October 19, 2021.

Los Rios is committed to safeguarding our information systems and the confidential data stored on those systems. MFA requires users to complete multiple steps to verify their identity before they can access Los Rios applications or online accounts by creating an extra layer of security that makes it incredibly difficult for attackers to get past in the event a user's password is compromised or stolen.

CSU Fall 2022 Application Period Now Open
The Cal State University Fall 2022 admissions application period is Oct. 1 to Nov. 30, 2021. Encourage students to connect with the Transfer Center to make a plan and move forward!
Campus Safety in the Digital Age
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month we take time to educate ourselves about how to be healthy in our relationships, learn the types of abuse often found in unhealthy intimate partner relationships, and remember those we have lost to domestic violence.

Over the last few years, communities have seen a rise in technology enabled abuse. Join us for "EndTAB: Campus Safety in the Digital Age," on Oct. 4, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., either in person at Sacramento State’s Union Hall or via Zoom: 869 0998 9265.

Guest Speaker Adam Dodge, co-founder of EndTAB (a local non-profit specializing in educating about and supporting survivors of technology enabled abuse), will help us define and recognize technology enabled abuse, explain red flags and warning signs of potential abuse, and provide tips for healthy, digitally safe relationships. We’ll also hear from our Los Rios Confidential Campus Advocate, Dominique Rosete, about the services they provide to our community.
October is Filipino American History Month
For more information on the significance of October as Filipino American History Month, visit the Filipino American National Historical Society website. CRC is hosting a virtual keynote presentation with Dr. Robyn Magalit Rodriguez, “A Century in the Making: The Unfolding History of Filipinos in Greater Sacramento,” on Thursday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All are welcome!
National Coming Out Day
October 11 is National Coming Out Day. Join us for "Stories and Healing to Celebrate National Coming Out Day," on Oct. 11, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. During this event, we will learn about the history of Coming Out, share and hear stories, and feel the support of the community. We have designated the last 15 minutes for a healing space. Registration is required.

Listening Session for Afghan Community
Los Rios colleges stand in solidarity as our Afghan community is hurting as a result of the recent and ongoing events in Afghanistan. There will be a listening session on Thursday, Oct. 7, 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., to provide students a safe space of support and community. Mental health professionals, faculty and staff, and community members will be present to show support and listen to students. We want to learn how we can best support you and your families. Also, we want to share about the resources at the colleges and in the community available to you.
Viviane Ngassam Appointed New Instructional Science Lab Supervisor
Viviane Ngassam has been selected as the new Instructional Science Laboratory Supervisor in Science and Allied Health. She started her new position on Friday, Oct. 1.
 
Viviane was a Chemistry Laboratory Technician at SCC for nearly three years and comes with a broad Science academic background, many years as a Science Laboratory manager, and a proven commitment supporting greater student diversity in STEM.
 
She has been awarded three Master’s Degrees: Science, Technology & Health (University of Paris XI), Applied Biology, (University of Yaoundé) and Biochemistry (University of Yaoundé). Prior to joining Sacramento City College as a Lab Tech for Chemistry, she was the Lab Manager and Safety Coordinator for 11 years in Dr. Atul Parikh’s research group at UC Davis.
 
In addition to her extensive educational background in STEM and many years of laboratory management experience, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to equity and supporting our students. She has volunteered throughout COVID at food distribution events put on by the college. In addition, Viviane has provided significant support for Professor Devoun Stewart’s efforts to develop culturally relevant pedagogy in Chemistry.  
 
Supporting students is not a new focus for Viviane. While at UC Davis, she recruited and mentored high school students from underserved populations into a 6 to 8-week summer program in which they engage in cutting edge, interdisciplinary scientific research. In addition, she was a member of UCD’s Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) which provides an immersive, collaborative and flexible learning environment in which undergraduate students earn academic credit for participating in multi-year research projects. 
 
Viviane has also demonstrated that she is dedicated to her own professional growth by attending numerous professional development programs at SCC focusing on building a more welcoming and inclusive educational environment.
