Alicia has been a steady and reliable member of the SAH Division office for many years (now under the Education and Health Professions Division). She is always available when we need her on committees or to assist other staff members. Her thoughtful and kind communication style puts nervous students at ease and in the right direction for success. Alicia is also helpful in maintaining a calm environment in our office even during the busiest time.

We are all very grateful for her experience, thoughtful contributions, and overall positive energy. This award would recognize our appreciation for her work in our division in addition to what SCC represents!

Congratulations, Alicia, and thank you for your dedication to the college!

Caring Campus Long-Term Planning Committee (CCLTPC) Happenings

January

We all know the first few days of a new term students need a little extra assistance. The Caring Campus Committee is so very proud of our collective Panther Pride. Thank you to those of you that had the chance to join the CCLTPC in our first WalkAbout! We wore our SCC gear and took a few moments to cruise our buildings or more of the campus to say some hellos and lend help to students looking for their classrooms.
Coffee cheers to our first Caring Campus Coffee and Tour of the Learning Resources Center held on Jan 25th. We had a wonderful turnout of classified professionals, managers and faculty.

Webpage Wednesday was held on Feb 1st this year. While our first asynchronous version was a few weeks ago the website work continues. Classified Reflection Retreat Registration Deadline Tomorrow

All Classified Professionals are invited to the 2023 Classified Reflection Retreat! Please join us for lunch and a variety of important topics centered around campus representation, participatory governance, and workplace resiliency. This is an opportunity to share your experiences, discuss our obstacles, and work together to rebuild our strength in finding community in each other.

This year's event will be presented primarily in a casual discussion panel/workgroup style with break-out sessions to support active engagement, and provide attendees with opportunities to shape future Classified Senate agendas. Off-site, outdoor location to be announced.

Reminder: Business Services Office vs. Business Office

Pop quiz! What's the difference between the Business Services Office and the Business Office?

Business Services Office — Where you pick up your paycheck, where students pay fees, etc. Financial office.
Business Office — Division office for our college's Business academic program. Instructional office.

We often use these terms interchangeably, but they are two completely different offices, with different responsibilities, and are located across the campus from one another. When referring students or colleagues to the Business Services Office, please be sure to use the correct terminology and direct them to the office at the ground floor of Rodda Hall North.

Celebrate Holi Festival with API Center!

Join us in celebrating Holi, the festival of color, celebrated by many South Asian countries. All students are welcomed to join and learn more about the Holi Festival.

The API Center will be providing white t-shirts and painting supplies for students to showcase their creativity in celebrating the Holi Festival.

Note: This event involves color powder that can stain clothes or irritate skin. We will be providing safety equipment for students to participate in the color powder activity.

City Theatre Presents: Beyond Persuasion

City Theatre presents "Beyond Persuasion," adapted by Lori Ann DeLappe-Grondin from Jane Austen's "Persuasion."

The show opens this week, Thursday, March 2, in the Performing Arts Auditorium at SCC. It runs through March 12.

"Beyond Persuasion" follows the story of the admirable and sweet Anne Elliot, the heroine who has a resigned outlook that she will not marry. The story centers on themes of love, and rekindled romance, and comments on the lavish and superficial life of Bath, where the story is partly set. Amidst the satire of the superficiality of high-status society, there is also a Royal Navy influence found through Captain Fredrick Wentworth and others that hints at an outgoing or fulfilling life outside of society's pretensions.

Grad Petition Workshops

Let students know there will be two workshop sessions Thursday, March 2, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., in Counseling RHN 147, to help them complete their graduation petition. This is an in-person workshop hosted by the Counseling office. The petition filing deadline is Friday, March 3.

Students Begin Paid Internships at CA State Assembly

Nine SCC students started their paid internships this semester at the California State Assembly through a partnership between the college's Work Experience Education and Internship program and the California Assembly Community College Corp. The students will be working onsite at the State Capitol, logging 20 to 35 hours a week at $17 an hour. In addition to income, they will be gaining experiential skills that can boost their resumes and lead to exciting, fulfilling careers! Women’s History Month

Dedicated to recognizing the contributions of women, this year’s theme for Women’s History Month is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories: Resist. Persist. Celebrate.” You’re invited to attend the many events taking place during the month of March. While the first Women’s History Day took place in 1909, a full month dedicated to reflect on the often overlooked contributions of women throughout history, didn’t take place until 1987.

Welcome Los Rios Director of Student Mental Health Services

As part of our districtwide effort to build on and expand Los Rios’ mental health and wellness service delivery for students, Taylor Johnson has been appointed to serve as Los Rios’ new Director of Student Mental Health.

Taylor is a licensed marriage family therapist and has worked in the mental health field for more than nine years. Taylor’s experience developing and managing Wellness Centers, from program development, implementation, oversight, staffing, data collection, and reporting, provides a strong foundation for our collective efforts to build and grow a culturally sensitive and supportive mental health and wellness program for Los Rios. Taylor’s work with foster youth and students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as her work to create welcoming environments for all students and staff alike, also provides a good foundation as she builds upon Los Rios’ efforts to expand mental health services for the district’s diverse student communities.

Gaming & Internet Addiction: Exploring New Research & Prevention

Join us on Friday, March 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. via Zoom to explore the prevalence of internet and gaming addiction in our culture that increasingly relies on technology in all areas of our lives. Recent research around this growing disorder will be shared as well as how apps and video games are built to keep us hooked. Learn how to identify risk behaviors and limit addictive use patterns. Hosted by the ARC Mental Health and Wellness Team.

Summer Class Schedules

The Summer 2023 class schedule is now available on the Sacramento City College website! Please encourage students to check out the summer class offerings and make sure they are ready to register for classes. Students' priority enrollment appointments are available in eServices now and enrollment will begin Monday, March 6.

Summer Parking

The Los Rios colleges will not be issuing student parking permits for the summer 2023 semester, but students should only park in student designated parking spaces. Please be sure to follow all parking rules such as only parking in handicapped spots if you have the appropriately issued placard and no parking in fire or loading zones, as violations of these could result in a ticket.
