Commencement Update

We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a Curbside Commencement to celebrate our graduates! More details will be coming soon, including student information on how to register and what to expect during the event.

Keep checking your inbox since we will also be sending out a request for staff and faculty volunteers soon. If you want to help celebrate our grads, make sure to save the date: Wednesday, May 19, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Please note that due to time constraints we will not be ordering faculty regalia. If you have your own, you are welcome to wear it or join us in your best spirit gear!

Sunday Supper with Chef Patrick Mulvaney

On Sunday, April 18, Chef Patrick Mulvaney — a Sacramento legend and Los Rios Colleges Foundation Board member — will share one of his favorite three-course meals, via Zoom. You’re invited to cook along with him, from the comfort of your kitchen!

Sunday Supper will benefit the Los Rios Promise to Career scholarship, which this year is providing scholarships to students across our district who remained on ground in the programs deemed essential to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. SCC students in our nursing, occupational therapy assistant, and physical therapy assistant programs will benefit with finish line scholarships to help them pay for state licensing and testing upon graduation.

Raychel Andrade, a recent graduate from SCC’s Nursing Program who received a Promise to Career scholarship in December, said, “It was such an exciting surprise to hear my name as a recipient during my pinning ceremony. The testing and licensing fees are very expensive for nursing graduates, and receiving a scholarship was incredibly helpful with the cost to becoming a licensed RN. I am so thankful!”

Tickets are $100, and 100% of ticket sales will help our students!

Mini Grant Applications Welcome!

Do you have a great idea for a project that will improve the student experience, the teaching and learning environment, and/or impact student success? Propose it as part of the Mini Grant process! Applications will be accepted April 19 – May 10.

The Mini Grant program funds innovative ideas that help to further student success at SCC. Mini Grants of up to $3,000 will be awarded, and may be used to buy equipment and supplies, or help support research, coursework, or other projects/activities directly related to the college’s educational mission.

Mini Grants are made possible through the support of generous donors to the SCC Fund. Many employees give to the SCC Fund providing crucial resources that help improve the services our campus can provide and make an important difference to the students we serve.

Grant funds should be expended next fiscal year (July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022.

Save the Date: Los Rios Virtual Career Fair

All Los Rios students and alumni are invited to join us on Tuesday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a virtual career fair. Employers will host one-on-one appointments and group sessions via Handshake, Los Rios’ online job and internship platform, to discuss available jobs and internships. Please encourage students not to miss this opportunity to meet employers who want to hire Los Rios students!

Student Election Candidate Forum

SCC will hold a student election forum Thursday, April 15, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Zoom. Encourage students to attend and learn about the candidates for the 2021 student elections!

Voting will take place in eServices April 20-21.

Talk on US-China Relations

Join the SCC Global Studies Program on Thursday, April 15, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., for a presentation and discussion with SCC Professor of Political Science Alex Xiao on the topic of “US-China Relations: Challenges for the Biden Administration." Join by Zoom.

Professor Xiao will discuss Chinese-US relations in light of the Biden administration transition, looking at the goals and strategies of both countries and their interests around the world, concluding with a look into the future with the question: “Is cooperation still possible?”

Wellness Writing for Stress Relief

Join us for a "Write Your Way to Wellness" workshop on Wednesday, April 14 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. via Zoom.

Learn about the therapeutic power of wellness writing and journaling, which can help you decompress when life's many demands start to overwhelm.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month and STI/STD Awareness Week

April 11-17 is STI/STD Awareness Week. There are 20 million new sexually transmitted infection/disease (STI/STD) cases in the U.S. every year. Adding the new cases each year with existing infection, there are an estimated 110 million total STIs among Americans. STI’s are common, but people may not know they have one because many do not have symptoms. But left undetected and untreated, STI’s can cause serious health consequences. Some good resources include the CDC, Sacramento County Public Health, and Planned Parenthood.

Sexual Assault is one of the most serious, pervasive yet underreported crimes in the world. According to the CDC, in the United States nearly one in five women (22 million) have been raped at some point in their lives. Studies also show that 33 men per year are sexually assaulted as well, yet only 12% of sexual assault victims report the incident to the authorities.

Sexual violence is a major public health, human rights and social justice issue that impacts the well-being of individuals, families and communities. For more information, please contact the Confidential Advocate for (WEAVE). Her role is to support students and staff at all four campuses who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault/harassment, or sex trafficking.

There is a webinar for those interested in healing through storytelling, and a link to a Powerpoint presentation on gender-based violence and harassment training for employees which was put together by the Los Rios Title IX Officers.

Take a Virtual Tour of the FLC Student Art Show

The Annual Folsom Lake College Student Art Show is currently on virtual display through Sunday, May 16 and features various artworks created by FLC students. A diverse range of media from drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, and metal arts is exhibited. The show represents a wide range of styles and techniques by beginning and advanced level students guided by the Visual Arts Department faculty.

Passing of a Colleague

It’s with great sadness we share that former SCC music faculty Don Silva has passed away.

Professor Silva was a positive influence and bright energy, that supported and inspired thousands of students over his more than 30 years at SCC. During his tenure he taught percussion classes and also ran the Music Lab going as far back as the 70s. Off campus, he was actively involved in music in the community as the Drum and Percussion instructor for the Capitalaires all-girl Drum Corps and Sacramento Freelancers Drum and Bugle Corps.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues. Due to COVID-19 the service will be for family only.

President Gutierrez's Office Hour

President Gutierrez will be holding an office hour twice a month during the Fall semester. Office hours will be held on the second Friday at 8:30 a.m. and fourth Thursday at 2:30 p.m. The next upcoming office hour will be Thursday, April 22, 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please look for an email prior to each event to sign up. Zoom info will be sent via a calendar invite on the day before the event to those who signed up.
