Parking Reminder
All Los Rios employees must have their employee parking permit to park in staff spaces or you may receive a ticket. You can get your parking permit from the LRPD front counter. Permits issued in Fall 2022 are good until June 1, 2023.
Please be sure to follow all parking rules such as only parking in handicapped spots if you have the appropriately issued placard and no parking in fire or loading zones, as violations of these could result in a ticket. Los Rios will not be issuing parking permits for students for the Spring 2023 semester, but students should only park in student designated parking spaces.

Information about Study Abroad
In Paris, France
Los Rios students will have the unique opportunity this summer to study in and become familiar with one of the great cities of the world – Paris, France. For an immersive five weeks, from June 21 through July 28, 2023, students will study the history of France from the Roman Empire to the present. Following the classroom meeting each day, students will continue their learning by visiting the sites where this history happened. Participation in such a program will likely change how you see the world and your place in it, for as Victor Hugo wrote in Les Misérables, “to study in Paris is to be born in Paris.” The deadline to apply is Tuesday, March 28. In Barcelona, Spain
Los Rios Study Abroad is sending a cohort of students to Barcelona, Spain for the Fall 2023 semester! This immersive semester program will be September 16 - December 15, 2023 and is open to all Los Rios students. The program offers academic courses that are transfer level and/or meet GE/IGETC requirements so students will stay on track while enjoying the rich history, art, and culture of Barcelona. The priority application deadline is Friday, April 28, 2023, though applications will be accepted until Friday, June 16, 2023. Internship Info Session: Prep Médico Pathway Program
All Los Rios students are invited to a virtual informational session on Thursday, January 26 from 10:00 to 11:00 am to learn about Prep Médico, an immersive summer pathway program for undergraduate students pursuing medicine. Register in advance via Handshake.
Program Highlights:
- Engage with health professionals from UC Davis Medical and Kaiser Permanente
- Examine Latinx health disparities and the social determinates of health
- Be eligible for a small stipend upon program completion

Student Leadership Retreat & Lobby Day Training
Students have an upcoming opportunity to learn about lobbying and advocating on behalf of their community college and peers. Please let students know they are invited to a special training for Los Rios students on Friday, January 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Sacramento at the Capitol. This training, in preparation for Lobby Day, will be led by Capitol staff and is open to all Los Rios students.

Effective Job Search Workshop Hosted by CRC
Students will learn how to develop an effective job search plan at our workshop Friday, Jan. 27, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
The workshop will cover basic strategies for finding and applying to the jobs they want, including:
- How to be intentional
- Where to search for opportunities
- What to include in their application packet
The workshop is hosted by CRC Work Experience and Internship, and is open to all Los Rios students.

SCC Alumna Turns 102 Years Old
Former SCC and CRC student Shirley Allen just celebrated her 102nd birthday. After living in Mexico City for more than 50 years, she moved to Sacramento and went back to school at the ripe age of 76 to earn her first degree at Cosumnes River College. Over the next 14 years, she would earn eight more from both CRC and Sacramento City College.
The nine degrees are all hung in rows proudly on Allen's bedroom wall, surrounded by a dozen more certificates of recognition. The degrees range from science, anthropology, education, Spanish.
A former teacher herself, she maintained a 4.0 GPA the whole time. This teacher loved being the student.

Racial Justice Book Circle
All Los Rios employees are invited to participate in FLC’s Spring 2023 Racial Justice Book Circle as we read and discuss Heather McGhee’s book, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. McGhee’s specialty is the American economy — and the mystery of why it so often fails the American public. From the financial crisis of 2008 to rising student debt to collapsing public infrastructure, she found a root problem: racism in our politics and policymaking. But not just in the most obvious indignities for people of color. Racism has costs for white people, too. It is the common denominator of our most vexing public problems, the core dysfunction of our democracy and constitutive of the spiritual and moral crises that grip us all. But how did this happen? And is there a way out? McGhee embarks on a deeply personal journey across the country from Maine to Mississippi to California, tallying what we lose when we buy into the zero-sum paradigm — the idea that progress for some of us must come at the expense of others.
To accompany the book read, join your colleagues on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm via Zoom, starting Wednesday, February 1, to review and discuss the concepts addressed. Several e-copies of the book are also available via the Los Rios Libraries. We also encourage you to support BIPOC-owned businesses and authors by shopping at these local Black-owned bookstores - All Things Literacy and Underground Books. We hope you will join us as we continue our district's commitment to cultivating a culture of anti-racism on our campuses!

Human Trafficking Prevention Month
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked worldwide – including right here in the United States. It can happen in any community and victims can be any age, race, gender, or nationality. Traffickers might use violence, manipulation, or false promises of well-paying jobs or romantic relationships to lure victims into trafficking situations. This month, take the time to educate yourself about human trafficking and to learn to spot the signs of trafficking. Learn more about human trafficking.
