Grad Gives Back with New Scholarship Fund for Re-Emerging Scholars

Graduate Breece Phipps has created the SpaceFox Scholarship for Re-Emerging scholars at Sacramento City College. A student of the Re-Emerging Scholars program himself, Phipps is now in a position to give back to the college where he found the resources to turn his life around. He is currently working on the Artemis Project at NASA as a as a Propulsion System Flight Controller in Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center.

As a teenager, Phipps’ life spiraled out of control because of drug addiction and multiple arrests. Ultimately, because of his addiction, he was sentenced to prison and was at the lowest point in his life. Prison was a pivotal moment, and he vowed to make a change and not waste the last chance he was given. This challenge presented the opportunity for him to mature cognitively, physically, and spiritually — but more importantly, it allowed him to grow academically. Following his release, he enrolled in Sacramento City College and began to fulfill the vision he once had. He transferred to USC and completed his BS and MS in Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering, which led to his job at NASA.

Phipps hopes that this scholarship will support others who are looking toward education as a means to change the course of their life. The $1,000 scholarship supports a Re-Emerging Scholar with financial need, with a preference for Engineering majors first, or any STEM major second.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent web-based survey related to the future of on-campus dining. We are thrilled to announce that 7,406 students, faculty, and staff engaged the survey, providing invaluable information about our community’s diversity of needs and preferences that we are relying upon to plan and implement new and improved on-campus foodservice at each of our member institutions.

Congratulations to the seven lucky campus community members who completed the survey and were selected as winners of the participation incentive prizes. The winners have all been selected and notified.

We greatly appreciate your participation in this important initiative for the entire Los Rios Community College District. Thank you!

There’s an App for That

Mental health apps are designed to help users improve their emotional well-being, become more mindful, and address common mental health issues. Although the following tools can all help improve your mental health and reduce stress and anxiety, please note that none of them are intended to be used as an alternative to a therapist or other mental health professionals.

Consider downloading the following (note: free versions are available but some may require additional purchases for premium content):

  • Happify: Happify uses games to boost your mood. The activities were developed with positive psychology techniques and CBT interventions.
  • Insight Timer: Insight Timer offers guided meditations, music tracks and discussion groups/community.
  • Mindshift: Was created to help develop skills to manage anxiety. Features include short meditations, thought journals, coping cards, and activities to face fears, change beliefs, and develop healthy habits.
  • Worry Watch: Worry Watch offers guided anxiety journaling and coping techniques. The app also offers a mood tracker and positive reinforcements.
  • I am Sober: I Am Sober is useful for quitting alcohol. It encourages you to identify triggers, recognize patterns, and develop healthy habits to meet your goals and achieve sobriety. It offers a withdrawal timeline so you can learn what to expect.

May 9 is National Fentanyl Awareness Day

Fentanyl is involved in more deaths of Americans under 50 than any cause of death, including heart disease, cancer, homicide, suicide and other accidents. Illicit fentanyl is driving the recent increase in US drug overdose deaths. It is odorless, tasteless, extremely potent, and used to make fake pills disguised as Oxycontin, Percocet and Xanax. You can’t tell which pills contain a lethal amount of fentanyl. Learn more at fentanylawarenessday.org and spread the word to save a life.

Bite of Reality Workshop

Hoping to improve your money management and financial literacy? Join us for a Virtual Bite of Reality Workshop that offers hands–on money management simulation at noon on May 11. A Zoom link will be emailed to all participants who RSVP the day prior to the event.

Passing of a Colleague

It is with a heavy heart that we share news of the passing of David Warren, longtime Humanities professor who retired from SCC in 1993. He was hired in 1969, so spent more than two decades at SCC, where he became known for preparing engaging presentations and dressing in period costume to teach his students. He also served as department chair. Following his retirement, Warren and his wife, Lois Franke, established the SCC David and Lois Warren Scholarship Fund.

Warren passed on April 12 at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, whom he met in Florence, Italy, in 1970. Together they built and lived a life filled with travel, history and art.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Cathedral, 2620 Capitol Ave. in Sacramento. A reception will follow in the Trinity's Great Hall.

In lieu of flowers and per Warren's wishes, donations can be made in his name to any charity of your choice.
