Virtual Fridays
This summer, SCC is launching a pilot program for Virtual Fridays, from June 2 through August 4. The college will continue with on-ground services and office hours Monday through Thursday, while Fridays will be a remote work day for most employees (exceptions are those for whom essential functions of their job cannot be done remotely). Please contact your supervisor with any questions.
Students will continue to have access to support services on Fridays by phone or email communication and through virtual appointments. While we will be virtual, the experience that students have when they interact with us is critical. We must be present and ready to assist, whether in-person or virtually!

Save the Date for Fall Convocation
Please make sure to save Friday, August 18 on your schedules for our 2023 Fall Convocation! From 9 a.m. to about noon, we’ll gather in the Performing Arts Center.
The days before Convocation we’ve lined up some fun, interactive and inspirational professional learning opportunities that we’ll unveil to you soon.
Some emerging highlights:
- Open houses to celebrate our student facing centers, such as the collaborative Tutoring Center in LR144
- A fantastic historical archives photo presentation curated by our Special Collections Librarian, Nanette Reyes Cruz
- Interactive classes and labs you can take from SCC faculty
- A field trip to Land Park via the Field Ecology program
We look forward to having tabling options to enjoy and connect to important programs and centers during Convocation. Details in future Cityscape editions and SRC newsletters will provide details as they take shape.

Volunteer at Honrando a Nuestros Estudiantes
The annual Latinx/Chicanx Recognition Ceremony, Honrando a Nuestros Estudiantes (Honoring Our Students), is a Los Rios district-wide event that celebrates the accomplishments of students that have earned a certificate and/or degree or are transferring to a four-year university.
The 2023 14th annual celebration will be hosted at Cosumnes River College Stadium on Friday, May 19 at 7 pm and we are still in need of volunteers! If you are interested in helping make this celebration an exciting moment for our students, please sign up.

Open Enrollment Ends Soon!
Executives, faculty and staff have the opportunity to enroll and/or make changes to benefits through May 19th, with changes effective July 1st, 2023.
Enrollment information has been communicated by email containing information on important changes and considerations this year, as well as information on how to enroll and make changes. Please note that medical rates will NOT be changing at this time. Instead, they will be updated in the fall to reflect the new annual fall open enrollment period, with changes effective January 1st, 2024. You will receive this information by email in late October.

Black Academy Summer Orientation RSVP Deadline July 31
Let incoming first-year students know about SCC's Black Academy, a program designed to support and guide students in their transition to college and provide a general introduction to the people and resources that will help them students flourish!
During this two-day orientation in August, students will have the opportunity to engage in fun social programs included that will bring you all closer to each other as a community at SCC. Students must register by July 31.

Congratulations to the DSA Scholarship Winners!
The Distinguished Service Award is one of the most prestigious awards offered at Sacramento City College and dates to the early years of the college.
Two students are selected each year. This award comes with a $1,500 scholarship. Recipients are honored in various ways including on the SCC website, social media and at the May 2023 Commencement.

Haily Holston
Over the past three years at SCC, Haily Holston has been an active participant and leader in STEM-related activities, including the Multicultural Engineering Coalition, MESA, and the STEM Club. She has also worked to organize “STEMinar Panels” for all interested students at SCC, which allows people the opportunity to speak with a diverse array of engineering and science professionals for career advice. Among her achievements, she is a PAL Leader Tutor and participated in Undergraduate Research in Chemistry, served as Student Senate President in 2021-2022, and currently serves as the Region II Regional Affairs Director for the Student Senate for the California Community Colleges, meeting regularly with student delegates from the 14 colleges in Region II.
Haily is Bioengineering major with a 3.4 GPA. She is still deciding where she will transfer next year, but UC Irvine and UC San Diego are at the top of her list. She plans to go to graduate school in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration, then work in the technical field for some years before eventually pursuing STEM work that includes a focus on advocacy.

Eden Lange
Eden Lange has a long history of service to her community that started in her childhood in Reading, Pennsylvania and has continued through today. She volunteered in many activities through the Quaker church, including regularly working at their soup kitchen, assisting with animal rescue, and volunteering with two different organizations that provide horses as therapy to help people with disabilities.
At SCC, she created the Sustainability and Environmental Club in the Fall of 2019 and has served as President since its founding. The club has hosted numerous speakers, organized a regular clothing swap, done park and trail clean-ups, participated in food distribution, organized the college's Earth Day event, and acted to make SCC a voting location, helping our students have a greater voice in the outcome of elections.
Eden is a Math major and has a 3.93 GPA. She plans to transfer to UC Berkeley next year to major in Statistics and minor in Environmental Science. Her goal is to start a firm that uses statistics and modeling to help businesses and governments evaluate the risk of climate change in their decision-making.

SCC Student, College Corps Program in the News
SCC is part of a statewide program called College Corps, that helps students pay for college while facilitating community service throughout California. Students are placed in service jobs in K-12 education, food insecurity and climate mitigation to help the state tackle some of its most pressing challenges.
Recently, one of our students, Elena Orozco, was featured in an article about the program. Below is an excerpt from the article.
College Corps also benefits students like Elena Orozco, 36, who are excluded from federal financial aid and Federal Work-Study. “I am undocumented, so my family, the help that’s available, it’s not very much,” said Orozco, a student at Sacramento City College who moved to California from Mexico with her mother when she was 4.
Before College Corps, she juggled classes while supporting her young son by working in restaurants, sometimes two shifts a day, never knowing how much money she’d bring in or when she’d be free to reclaim the sleeping boy from relatives. Each time he got sick, she worried about getting fired. Now that she’s a fellow, working at an organization that supports primarily non-English-speaking families, she can pick her 9-year-old up from his after-school program and spend the evening with him.
