What's Happening
The Miami Beach Fire Department (MBFD) will be flushing hydrants citywide starting Monday, September 14 until Friday, September 25, 2026.
Flushing activities are scheduled each night including weekends, starting at 11 p.m. MBFD shifts will start at the south end of Miami Beach and work north in sections each night.
This annual maintenance is essential to ensure the hydrants and the entire water distribution system are in peak working condition when we need them most. Flushing also helps identify any maintenance needs before emergencies arise.
Additionally, the results from this testing contribute to the city’s Insurance Services Office (ISO) Fire Score, a national metric used by insurance companies to help set home insurance rates. MBFD proudly maintains the highest possible Class 1 rating.
What to Expect
- There are over 1,400 fire hydrants throughout the city. If you're out at night, expect to see MBFD personnel in your neighborhood tending to the fire hydrants. Each hydrant flush takes less than five minutes.
- Flushing of the hydrants may stir up sediment in the water mains and temporarily cause some water discoloration in nearby properties.
- If you experience cloudy water coming from faucets in your home or business, this sediment is likely related to the nearby hydrant flushing activity.
- Remedy this by running an outdoor hose spigot, bathtub faucet or sink (all the way on) for a short period of time (two to five minutes) until the water coming out is clear again.
- It is also recommended to remove and rinse off the small screens found on most kitchen and bathroom faucets to clear small debris particles.
Timeline
Citywide fire hydrant flushing will begin on September 14, 2026 and go on nightly for approximately two weeks. This schedule could change or be extended due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
Please note, hydrant flushing occurs during regular shift hours and does not impact emergency response times. If at any point an emergency call comes in, all flushing activities will pause and they will immediately respond to the emergency.
