Civic Center is Abuzz with Activation

The plazas were activated throughout the summer with a host of different activities. Chess players battled it out for the top spot with a Mechanics' Institute and Civic Center CBD-led chess tournament in UN Plaza, where players also had the chance to participate in simul with Chess Grandmaster Sam Shankland (image left). Also the All the Way Live Hip Hop Festival and Competition brought together hip hop dancers of all age for demos and dance battles.

Earlier in the summer, the Boombox Sundays event brought over a hundred dance class participants to UN Plaza for an all-day dance class party led by Rae Studios, with support from the CBD, SFOEWD and Mayor Lurie; while the end of summer was marked with the Back to Work (and school) Week of activation across the three plazas led by the CBD.

This summer also saw thousands descend on Civic Center Plaza for the free Shaboozey concert from Another Planet Entertainment with SF Rec & Park and Empire Records, as well as a vintage clothing market, and ongoing daily activation. What a summer — and we're just gearing up for fall and winter!
