Merry and Bright: Annual Civic Center Tree Lighting De"lights" the Crowds

Our annual Civic Center Plaza Holiday Tree Lighting brought its festive merriment to Civic Center Plaza on December 4. The night's entertainment led by Boxcar Theatre’s Artistic Director Nick A. Olivero shared the story of Boswick the Clown finding joy in the holiday season through an unfolding story that featured performances by the San Francisco Boys Choir, singer Doris Bumpus, magician Josh Farenbaugh, and actors Shaneen Black, Katie Baritell and Gregg Geoffrey. Meanwhile, the night's perfect weather gave way to "snow" flurries to the delight of children and those young-at-heart alike.

Also during the evening, holiday characters mingled with children and Another Planet Entertainment and the San Francisco Police Department marked another successful year of bringing more joy to the holiday season with a giveaway of over 1000 toys to those 12-and-under! At the Makers Village, San Francisco Public Library gave away hundreds of free children's books and SF Etsy led holiday crafting and interactive play. The event was capped off with Mayor London Breed lighting the tree, and Santa's arrival!

Special thanks to Another Planet Entertainment, City and County of San Francisco, Cordia Energy, Redwood Credit Union, San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department and StreetPlus.

Holiday Fanfare Series Wraps Up 11th Season

Also during the month of December, the Civic Center CBD's Holiday Fanfare Concerts popped up along Van Ness Avenue. Brass quartets and quintets from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music provided festive music for theater patrons of all ages as the holiday crowds made their way to and from the District's performing arts venues.

Thank You City Agencies & Private Donors

Civic Center's UN Plaza is the healthiest it's been in decades thanks to City agency coordination and private philanthropy. While there is still much work to be done in the UN Plaza vicinity, and throughout downtown, phase one efforts have produced impressive results.

This short video highlights UN Plaza conditions before and after improvement efforts, as well as highlights the work of dedicated City and community partners who made this first phase of improvements possible.

Please Help Us Continue the Momentum in 2025
