Civil Help Desk moves to Tuesdays and Thursdays starting in September
Tuesday Civil Help Desks start September 10
Do you want to volunteer at the VLB Civil Help Desk, but your Monday mornings are too hectic? Problem solved! Due to popular demand, we have changed our Civil Help Desk dates to Tuesday and Thursday mornings to avoid the Monday crunch.
The Civil Help Desk will switch to its new Tuesday/Thursday schedule on September 10. Volunteers are invited sign up from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The location will remain the same: Jefferson County Courthouse, fifth floor.
The Civil Help Desk is a vital part of the VLB mission by providing legal assistance to low-income individuals with issues including housing, finances, and a range of other legal matters. Click here to sign up now!
VLB welcomes new team members
We are pleased to announce two new team members to the VLB staff:
Twala Grant Wallace—Staff Attorney
Twala Grant Wallace earned her B.S. in Biology with an emphasis in Environmental Toxicology from Norfolk State University under the National Institutes of Health MARC program (Minority Access to Research Careers). While working in research, she developed an analytical passion that extended beyond the lab and drew her to the field of law.

Wallace received her law degree in 1992 from the University of Alabama School of Law and has practiced both civil and criminal law as a solo practitioner for more than 26 years.
Staff Attorney Twala Grant Wallace
Along the way, Wallace has worked as Coordinating Attorney for the Birmingham Division of Legal Services Alabama’s Disaster Relief Call Center, as well as served as an adjunct law professor at Miles College and Miles School of Law and as an Interim Municipal Court Judge in Bessemer. She is married to Steven D. Wallace, and they have one son, Tevin. She is a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Wallace chose to further her career at Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham out of a desire to utilize her legal experience to help others and impact society in a positive way.
Woodlawn Coordinator Jonathan Moore
Jonathan Moore—Woodlawn Coordinator
Jonathan Moore comes to us from The Woodlawn Foundation, where he served as a Manager of Community Partners in the Woodlawn community. A resident of Woodlawn for the past six years, Jonathan has always found ways to be an asset to the community and provide opportunities for others.

“I believe that Woodlawn is one of the few communities that provides opportunities to level the playing field for everyone. The Woodlawn Help Desk sponsored by VLB is an example of that.”
Thank you for volunteering—keep coming back, and bring your friends!
Thanks to these volunteers who shared their time and expertise at recent VLB Help Desks. Keep coming back—and bring a colleague! We have an urgent need for more attorney volunteers in order to continue providing access to justice for the low-income community. Sign up today!
