After suffering tragedy from the loss of a child, the perfect storm culminated for the Keyes family in creating the “I Love U Guys” Foundation. In September 2006, Emily Keyes was killed by a gunman who entered her high school. During the time she was held hostage, Emily sent her parents a text message, “I love you guys.” The Foundation was created to focus on the school safety by restoring and protecting children’s youth through educational programs and esteem building activities in collaboration with families, schools, communities, organizations, and government entities.
The Foundation paved the way in developing an imminent tool in school safety and classroom response to any incident. The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based not on individual scenarios but on the response to any given situation. The premise is simple – four actions that can be performed during an incident: Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. These common terms helps ensure students, teachers, and first responders all have a shared understanding of the directive that is being given during the threat.

School violence is an unfortunate reality of our time…Working together we can help make our schools a safer place for staff and students. Get involved – Make sure your school has a plan and that it is practiced on a regular basis.
