Clap Your Hands Say Yeah have announced the upcoming release of their eagerly awaited new album, Burned, arriving Friday, January 29, 2027, on the CYHSY label via Secretly Distribution, the defiantly independent home of founder Alec Ounsworth’s music for more than two decades. Pre-orders/pre-saves are available now.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s seventh studio album and first new LP in six years, Burned is heralded by today’s premiere of the lead single, “Fever of the Mind,” available everywhere now. Built on layers of synth riffs, the track surges upwards almost as a rejoinder to its lyrics, in which Ounsworth grapples with recurring bouts of depression, alienation, and what we inherit from those who came before us.
“This was the song that sort of thematically and sonically guided the rest of the album,” says Alec Ounsworth. “Maybe the most important thing for me is to establish the first and then shape the other songs around it.”

Burned is a product of both patience and urgency. Arriving six years after its predecessor, 2021’s New Fragility, it is both a long-awaited return and an immediate collection of songs Alec Ounsworth simply had to sing in this moment. Ounsworth had weathered a storm in recent years, from the dissolution of a relationship to the loss of his mother, his uncle, and a close friend in quick succession. Yet as much as his new songs emerged from grief and confusion and heartbreak, Ounsworth didn’t want to dwell there – those were only the jumping-off points. Once he began writing again, new material arrived in a burst: 10 vibrant songs that catalog the journey from loss to renewed hope. Burned became not just a mechanism through which Ounsworth could purge recent events, but also a way to wrangle with cycles of generational trauma. The good and bad of life unfold, and after time and distance Ounsworth began making sense of it all in song.
Having revisited the feverish timbre of the CYHSY’s initial breakthrough on the 2025 tour marking the 20th anniversary of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s self-titled debut, Ounsworth wrote Burned specifically thinking of how the songs would feel onstage. Ounsworth crafted the album in his home studio, then produced it with frequent collaborator Nick Krill before Dave and Mike Fridmann mixed it. An album designed as a complete thought, Burned sees Clap Your Hands Say Yeah questioning the connections we form with people, how and when we put in the effort to get better, and finally embracing it all despite the travails that come with it.
