School Board Elections
Strong leadership in our school district is critical to moving education forward in our school, community, and state. Seats held by Scott McComb and Pallin Turner expire this year and neither are running for election.

The following individuals are on the ballot for the upcoming election on Tuesday, September 12th: Jennifer Baumgart, Ann Meyer, Trish Okamoto and Stacy Pulliam. Please get to know the candidates and help make Clarinda Community Schools strong by exercising your right to vote. All Clarinda School District residents, including city and rural, can vote at the Lied Public Library from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Did you know that September is “Attendance Awareness Month”? While September has this national distinction, we believe good attendance is important throughout the school year and we work diligently at encouraging and supporting our students to attend school regularly.

Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and in life.

We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. Absences can add up quickly. A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days every month! Let us know how we can support you and your children so that they can show up for school on time every day.  We want your child to be successful in school! If you have any questions or need more information please contact your child’s school.

Cardinal Fund Supports Our Students and Schools
The Cardinal Fund Program, administered through the Clarinda Foundation, was created to support programs and learning opportunities for students in the Clarinda School District. Tax deductible donations help provide funding that supports the needs of our students and staff.

Donations support the following needs: scholarships, student programs, instruction, technology, facility, and other educational needs.

The Cardinal Fund is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, and all donations are tax deductible. To make a donation please contact Jennifer McCall at or 712-303-7528.
Technology Survey
Parents please complete this brief Technology Survey to help the district understand the environmental needs, skills, access, and classroom factors that impact technology utilization by our students and families.

This data will help the district make informed decisions to support the technology needs of our students, families, and staff.
Sign up for Strategic Planning Focus Groups
The Clarinda Community School District is pleased to announce its launch of a comprehensive strategic planning initiative. Over the next several months, the district will work to facilitate a process that incorporates a high level of community involvement.

There are multiple ways that community members are encouraged to be engaged in and informed about the planning process. In addition to participation in the initial focus groups, public comment will be solicited in response to a new mission statement draft, and progress updates will be issued to the public at regular intervals and posted on the district’s website. Hard copies of background documents and meeting notes will be available for public review throughout the process at the four school offices and the Lied Public Library.
Community focus groups are planned for the following dates:

October 3  10:00 am – NOON
October 5   6:00 – 8:00 pm
October 10 6:00 – 8:00 pm
October 12 6:00 – 8:00 pm
October 26   6:00 – 8:00 pm
November 2 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Each session can accommodate a maximum of 20 participants to allow for quality discussion. Based on community response, additional sessions may be added to this schedule. Refreshments will be served. To register for a focus group, please contact Nancy Hummel at or 712-542-5165.

Reminder of New Policy on Charging Lunches
In accordance with state and federal law, all school districts must adopt a policy ensuring district employees, families, and students have a shared understanding of expectations for paying for school meals.

This summer, the school board passed a policy that seeks to allow students to receive the nutrition they need to stay focused during the school day, prevent the overt identification of students with insufficient funds to pay for school meals, and maintains the financial integrity of the nonprofit school nutrition program.

Charging is not allowed and any account that incurs a negative balance of $10 will be turned over to the superintendent or the superintendent’s designee for collection. The school board also approved an agreement with a collection agency (Credit Bureau Services of Iowa, Inc.) that will be used to collect accounts that are not paid after reasonable attempts have been made by the district.
Coffee with Superintendent Stender
Join Superintendent Deron Stender on  Friday, October 6th, from 7:30-8:30 am,  at McDonalds for coffee.

The events are meant to be informal opportunities for conversation with the Superintendent. There are no agendas or formal presentations. Participants are encouraged to bring their questions and comments and are welcome to come and go as their schedule allows.

Monthly coffees are held on the first Friday of each month in a variety of locations in our community. Please check the  district website  for locations.
