A Message From the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Stakeholders,

I want to begin by thanking you for being a strong and supportive partner of our schools.  As a community, we are invested in the future of the many children we are entrusted to educate and care for.  With your support, we are able provide our students with the quality of education and life experiences you expect from us.  We take the responsibility to provide a well-rounded learning experience to heart and work at continuously improving the education and services we provide.  We want you to be proud of our students, staff, and schools!

While there have been many changes in the district, our commitment to our students, staff, parents and community remains strong and focused on the development of the whole child.  To do this, the district will focus on four goals during the 2017-2018 school year:

  1. Increasing Student Achievement

  2. Improving School Climate and Culture

  3. Fiscal Stability

  4. Facility Planning

As we work to achieve the 2017-2018 goals, we are excited to begin a comprehensive strategic planning process.  There will be several community focus groups for you to participate in and share your thoughts and ideas on the work, goals, and objectives of the district.  Participation and feedback from our students, staff, parents, and community will help provide the vision,  mission, and goals that will guide our work and make our schools great!   I look forward to working with all of our stakeholders as we plan and prioritize our work that builds Cardinal Pride.

Thank you for supporting our schools and making us the pride of our community!

The district is holding a Parent & Student Technology Summit for all middle school students on Monday, August 21st, at the middle school gym.  (View flyer here.)

Middle school parents and students are required to attend the one hour Summit before students can receive their learning device. Presenters from Apple, Lied Public Library, and the Iowa State Patrol will discuss digital learning, digital citizenship, internet safety, and responsibility for and care of devices.  At the conclusion of the presentations, students and parents who sign the Responsible Use Agreement will be issued their device.

Lifetouch has partnered with the school district and is providing hot dogs, buns, chips, and water so families can enjoy a meal as they learn more about the technology initiative.  Clarinda cheerleaders will provide childcare for those who need it.

If you are unable to attend the Summit, please contact Mrs. Garrett at the middle school (542-2132) to schedule an appointment to attend a training session between 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on Tuesday, August 22nd.

The vision of the district is that “Every student K-12 will have access to a device during the school day to enhance learning and differentiated instruction.” and the goal is “To allow students to think critically, collaborate, communicate, and create.”

To help maintain small groups, please plan on attending the session based on the first initial of the child's last name.

Notice of New Policy on Charging Lunches
In accordance with state and federal law, all school districts must adopt a policy ensuring district employees, families, and students have a shared understanding of expectations for paying for school meals.

On June 10, 2017 the school board conducted the first reading of policy 710.4 Meal Charges. The policy seeks to allow students to receive the nutrition they need to stay focused during the school day, prevent the overt identification of students with insufficient funds to pay for school meals, and maintains the financial integrity of the nonprofit school nutrition program. Charging is not allowed and any account that incurs a negative balance of $10 will be turned over to the superintendent or the superintendent’s designee for collection. The school board also approved an agreement with a collection agency (Credit Bureau Services of Iowa, Inc.) that will be used to collect accounts that are not paid after reasonable attempts have been made by the district.
Application for Free or Reduced Meals

HELP YOUR SCHOOL

By applying for the free or reduced lunch program you can help our schools receive education funds and discounts and your children can receive nutritious school meals for free or at a reduced cost.

Your family is eligible for this program if your total household income falls within the guidelines (review guidelines here) or if you receive benefits through one of these programs:

  • SNAP - Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
  • You are the legal guardian for one or more foster children

Download an "Application for Educational Benefits" from the district website. Please return completed applications to any school office. It is not necessary that your child/children eat school meals to earn this revenue, as some children prefer to bring bag lunches, but it is important that you report your eligibility for the program. Approved applications will help our school to qualify for additional funding or discounts for educational programs. Approved applicants will be notified and all information is confidential.

For questions or assistance in completing the application, please contact Joyce Johansen, Food Service Director, at 712-542-5167. Applicant information is kept confidential. Thank you for supporting Clarinda Community Schools!
