Digital Mammography at Clark Memorial Offers Early Detection of Breast Cancer

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer of American women. Regular mammograms can help detect breast cancer in an early stage. Women ages 40 and over should have a screening mammogram every year. According to the American Cancer Society, most breast cancer is found in women 50 and older. However, it does affect younger women. About 11 percent of all new cases in the U.S. are found in women under the age of 45, so it is important that all women over the age of 40 have a regular mammogram. In addition, black women have the highest death rate due to breast cancer. All women ages 40 and over should have a discussion with their doctor about when to start and how often to get a mammogram.

Most women who develop breast cancer have no known risk factors or family history of the disease. There are factors in reducing risk that include keeping a healthy weight, regular exercise, good sleep habits, no alcohol, reduced exposure to radiation, not using hormone replacement therapy, and breastfeeding your babies.

Clark Memorial Hospital's diagnostic imaging centers offer digital mammography at the hospital in Jeffersonville and Hunter Station in Sellersburg. Both locations offer advanced "soft touch" digital mammography for greater comfort, less radiation and a clearer image with more viewing options.

"The benefit of a screening mammogram is early detection of breast cancer which means that treatment can be started earlier in the course of the disease before it has spread. Our facilities are equipped with digital technology providing a sharp and safe image for an accurate diagnosis." said Linda Jenks, operations manager, medical imaging.

A regular mammogram is an effective way to detect breast cancer in an early state, so October is an ideal month to make an appointment.  Please call 812-246-4801 to schedule a mammogram today.

Patients using myClark Patient Portal Like the Convenience

Earlier this year, Clark Memorial Hospital and Clark Physician Group launched an online patient portal program called myClark. The number of patients using myClark has increased each month since its launch. To-date over 3,000 patients have created an account on myClark. Both patients using hospital services and the services of Clark Physician Group practices have had positive experiences.

Some benefits mentioned by patients using myClark are:

  • The ability to maintain medication lists that can be printed and taken with them to their doctor or pharmacy. Also, the ability to have a list emailed to them.
  • Having their patient education documents available online after their inpatient stay at the hospital.
  • Having their information from both the hospital and their Clark Physician Group doctor in one place online.
  • The ability to communicate with their doctor's office online via email.
  • The convenience of viewing lab results, requesting medication refills, and the ability to request or change a doctor's appointment online.
