Mecklenburg County Public Schools Gears Up for Exciting Open House & Teacher Meet & Greet

With the 2025-2026 school year just around the corner, Mecklenburg County Public Schools (MCPS) is rolling out the welcome mat for students and families across the district. MCPS will host its annual Open House & Teacher Meet & Greet this August, offering students the perfect opportunity to explore classrooms, connect with teachers, and get excited for a fresh new year of learning.

The event will be split across two days to accommodate families at all school levels:

  • Tuesday, August 4th – Elementary Families are invited from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Wednesday, August 5th – Middle & High School Families can attend from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Held at each respective school campus, the open house promises a fun and welcoming environment where students can drop off school supplies, familiarize themselves with classroom layouts, and meet the educators who will guide them through the coming year.

SCHOOL BUSES ARE BACK ON THE ROAD

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office reminds everyone: Virginia’s school bus safety laws will be in full effect as students return to school!

What Drivers Need to Know

  • You must stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign—no matter which direction you're coming from, unless there's a physical barrier (like a median) separating lanes.
  • Do not pass a stopped school bus. It’s not just illegal—it’s dangerous.

Penalties for Violations

  • Minimum $250 fine
  • Possible reckless driving charge
  • Points on your license

Let’s all do our part to protect the children of Mecklenburg County. Drive cautiously, especially in the mornings and afternoons.

Safety Starts With You!

Buckle up!

Virginia has enacted a new seat belt law, effective July 1, 2025, requiring all vehicle occupants, including those in the back seat, to wear a seat belt. Previously, only front-seat passengers were legally required to wear seat belts. The law is a secondary enforcement, meaning drivers can only be cited for a seat belt violation if they are pulled over for another infraction. The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $25.

July Update is here!

Hello, Gardeners!

Thank you to everyone who came out to help today.

We have harvested 994 pounds of fresh produce! WOW! Only 6 pounds to go to 1,000 lbs!

Between last Wednesday, July 8 and today, Tuesday, July 14, we picked 243 lbs of squash, zucchini, cucumbers, cantaloupe, and peppers. The cantaloupes are doing very well this year! Good size and ripening well.

Some of the tomatoes are starting to ripen. We planted them in different months, in hopes of providing the pantry throughout the summer.

Please feel free to come out and pick vegetables and fruit with us!

The next 3 garden dates:

• Thursday, July 16th @ 8:30 AM (Weather permitting)

• Tuesday, July 21st @ 8:30 AM (Weather permitting)

• Thursday, July 23rd @ 8:30 AM (Weather permitting)

Happy Gardening,

Janice, Rose, Connie
